Wither are a band from Australia that mixes depressive black metal with funeral doom and this is a review of their 2012 album "Necropolis" which was released by Aurora Astralis.
Drums range from slow to mid paced drumming with only a small amount of fast playing and no blast beats are present on this recording, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars and at times they have a very powerful sound to them, as for the synths which are only utilized briefly bring a very dark and depressive ambient sound to the music.
Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast riffs that combine depressive black metal with funeral doom as well as mixing in some dark sounding gothic rock melodies in the riffing as well as a good amount of soft and clean playing which gives the music an ambient feeling, while the lead guitars are very melodic guitar solos and leads, as for the classical guitars when they are utilized they use finger picking to add more darkness and despair to the music
Vocals range from high pitched depressive black metal screams to deep funeral doom growls as well as some clean singing which gives the music a gothic rock feeling, while the lyrics cover dark and depressive themes, as for the production it has a very dark, raw and primitive sound to it while you can still hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording as well as some of the songs being long and epic in length.
In my opinion Wither are a very great sounding hybrid of depressive black metal, funeral doom, and gothic rock and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Sonar Sphere" "Seeming" and "Transpression". RECOMMENDED BUY.
