Funeral Requiem is a solo project from Columbia that plays a mixture of atmospheric, depressive, post black metal, blackgaze and funeral doom/death metal and this is a review of his 2020 album "Negative Realms Of The Spirit" which was released by Nailed Nazarene Industries.
Nature orientated soundscapes start off the album along with some phone call samples a few seconds later over a suicide attempt before going into a heavier musical direction while one of the tracks is very long and epic in length as well as some ambient style synths also being utilized at times.
Vocals are mostly high pitched yet grim sounding black metal screams while the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody. Clean playing can also be heard in certain sections of the recording along with the slower sections of the songs bringing in elements of funeral doom metal.
At times the music gets very atmospheric sounding as well as the solos and leads also being done in a very dark yet melodic style. One track also introduces a brief use of death metal growls onto the recording as well as the faster sections of the music also bringing in a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling and throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them along with some tracks also adding in touches of blackgaze and post black metal as well as capturing a 90's second wave vibe at times, spoken word and movie samples also return on some of the later tracks, As the album progresses an instrumental is also added onto the recording and the album also closes with a cover of Satanic Warmaster's "My Dreams Of 8". The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover darkness, death, depression and occultism themes.
In my opinion Funeral Reguim is a very great sounding mixture of the atmospheric, depressive, post and ambient black metal genres with some elements of blackgaze, funeral doom and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Abysmal Negative Soul" "Astral Dark Dimensions" "Left Hand Path" and "Tormented Spirit". 8/5 out of 10.
