The Sarcophagus Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

When our previous vocali Niklas Kvarforth left the band for focusing Shining properly, Mørkbeast joined The Sarcophagus and hereby the vocal sound of the album had changed. The session drummer Oktay moved to Ireland after the drum recording session. After completing the recording we have started to look for a drummer for the gigs.Besides I have started to prepare material for the next album.I hope next album preparation will not be so long…

2.You have a new album coming out in April, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Yes the new album will be out on the 4th of April. This one has a better quality sound and production. It is more agressive and dark but also has melodic parts.During the recording of Towards The Eternal Chaos we had the same drummer problem so we made it drum machine which hadn’t satisfied us.In this album you can hear the acoustic drum sound blasting with the guitars. The musical style is same as in the recent one but I can’t describe the new style in a word.I can say that it is a black metal inspired by the 90’s black metal and created it’s own style.

3.I have seen the band refer to its musical style as 'anatolian raw black metal' can you tell us a little bit more about this term?

Anatolia is the ancient name of Turkey where dozens of ancient civilizations have been living more than 5000 years. We are using it not to describe the music style but an idea and black metal music coming from this land without meaning the national borders…

4.This is your first album since 2009, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

Yes it has been very long time…Actually we never wanted to delay things such a long time but I moved to another city, other band guys had their own music projects so we were silent during that time.I started to prepare these songs around 2014 and the recording was completed in 2016 but you know things take time…

5.Your lyrics deal with Mythology, Ancient Cultures and Mysticism, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in those topics?

As I mentioned in the recent question, all these inspirations are coming from the Anatolian culture. All those civilizations had various legacies and we love to use it in the music.I had the chance of studying Archeology, Religions History, Anatolian Civilizations during the university period and all these had a great influence on me and so on the music of course. All these themes are living together with each other.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'The Sarcophagus'?

Sarcophagus means “flesh eater” in ancient Greek and this means stone tomb. For us, it is the symbol of death, end of everything, in other words a bridge between life and death and this word is living with us for more than 20 years. We added “the” in front of Sarcophagus because there are too many bands with the name Sarcophagus

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We haven’t played live for a long time.Unfortunately we have had line up problems. The main line-up moved to another city/country and new line up was from different countries. You know it is not always easy to come together but now we are planning to play live very soon…Our old shows was great, we were playing with corpsepaint on the face, bulletbelts, nails, firebreathings etc…

8.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

Yes we may play live if we deal with the drummer problem.Everyone is working 5-6 days in a week so touring is a bit hard thing to do.Actually this was one the reasons of the delayed album. It is very hard to work and making music together.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

We have had lots of followers and friends since our recent works. When we released our new album track samples "Reign of Chaos" and "Ain Sof" had great feedbacks.Tracks also have killer reviews and scores All of these are very cool...

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that the band members are a part of?

Mørkbeast is blasting with his main band Todestriebe in Moscow. Our bass player Ozan is about to complete his own music studio Dead House, it will be finished very soon and I think this will be the next album recording's adress. He will be recording a new album with his main band Raven woods coming months.I have also a side project in my mind but details are not clear yet...

11.Where do do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Our first goal is to create new better albums and keep the black flame burning with The Sarcophagus. The thing what we are most satisfied with is spreading our music to the metal people all around the world.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

As I mentioned in previous question, the black metal The Sarcophagus plays inspired by the cult black metal band's of early 80-90's but what we are trying to do is creating our own style.I think with this album our sound  started to be a distinctive The Sarcophagus sound and we want to keep it.We are still listening these awesome albums such as old Emperor and Dissection albums. They will be always cult.I find Mgla very successful. They carry an old sound and combine it with the new sound. This is what we are doing now too.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thanks to all the fans, friends and metal people all around the world who support The Sarcophagus.

We also would like to thank to our labels.Together we shall destroy the barriers of light!!!!!!!
