  Philippines/Canada's  solo  project  Kratornas  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  showed  the  music  going  for  a  progressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2025  album  "God  Of  The  Tribes"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Grathila  Records.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  sounding  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  The  album  also  has  its  technical  and  dissonant  moments  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  Chants  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  some  of  the  music  also  adding  in  atmospheric  and  ritualistic  touches   and  most  of  the  recording  sticks  to  more  of  a  mid  tempo  direction,  acoustic  guitars  and  synths  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track.

  On  this  recording  Kratornas  continues  the  expand  on  the  progressive  black  metal  style  that  he  introduced  on  his  previous  ep.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  doomsday  themes.     

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Kratornas  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  progressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Cursed  Sky  Serpent"  and  "Ravaged  By  Hurakaan".  8  out  of  10.

Oskoreien/Hollow Fangs/2025 Full Length Review

 

  Oskoreien  are  a  duo  from  Los  Angeles,  California  that has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2025  album  "Hollow  Fangs".

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Dissonant  melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  album  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments,  all  of  the  drum  beats  are  programmed  and  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well a s  some  clean  playing  being  added  on  the  closing  track.

  On  this  recording  Oskoreien  goes  for  a  very  modern,  aggressive  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  philosophical  themes.

I Proélefsi/Self Titled/2025 EP Review

 

   I  Proélefsi  are  a  solo  project  from  Chile  that  plays  an  instrumental,  atmospheric  and  avant  garde  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  and  self  titled  2025  ep  which  will  be  released  in  July.

  A  very  dark,  heavy,  melodic  and  avant  garde  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  orchestral  arrangements  a  few  seconds  later.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  blast  beats  are  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  fast  riffing  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  money.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in a   small  amount  of  clean  playing,  voices  are  also  added  towards  the  end.

  I  Proélefsi  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  modern,  atmospheric  and  avant  garde  sounding  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw.

  Brazil's  solo  project  Hate  Gods  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  an  atmospheric ,  dissonant  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2025  album  "VOID".

  Synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times while  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals.  Clear  singing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  the  vocals   being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  some  dissonant  melodies.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Clean  playing  is  also  added  on  some  of  the  songs  along  with  the  recording  also  having  its  depressive  moments,  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  raw  tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard.  

  On  this  recording  Hate  Gods  goes  for  more  of  an  atmospheric,  depressive  and  dissonant  form  of  black  metal  that  is  very  different  from  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and r aw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Portuguese  and  cover  the  abyss  of  human  suffering.

  Czarna  Magia  are  a  solo  project  from  Poland  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  goes  for  a  very  aggressive,  occult  and  misanthropic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  album  "Morbid  Affection  To  Darkness"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Symbol  Of  Domination  Productions  and  The  End  Of  Times  Records.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  yet  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  old  school  era  as  well  as  being  very  modern  at  the  same  time.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized,  a  couple  of  tracks  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length.

  On  this  recording  Czarnia  magia  plays  a  very  aggressive,  misanthropic  form  of  occult  black  metal  that  brings  the  most  aggressive  sides  of  both  the  old  school  and  modern  era's  of  the  genre  together.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Misanthropy,  Chaos,  Anti  Civilization,  Occultism  and  Shamanism  themes.

  Rahvira  are  a  duo  from  Armenia  that  plays  an  epic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Ghosts  Of  Darkness"  which  was  released  in  2025  as  a  joint  effort  between  Holy  Mountains  Music  and  Wine  And  Fog  Productions.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  synths  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.  Vocals  are a  mixture  of  growls  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  which  also  get  very  high  pitched  at  times  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to t hem.

  Choirs  can  also  be  heard  briefly while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  some  of  the  tracks are  long  and  epic  in  length.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  some  touches  of  folk  music  also  being  utilized  at  times.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Armenian  History  and  Aryanism  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  Rahvira  are  a  very  great  sounding  epic  black  metal  duo  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "It's  Spring"  "Awareness" "The  Avenger"  and  "Only  Forward".  8  out  of  10.

  Wolfdom  are  an  international  band  with  members  from  Russia  and  Ukraine  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in t his  zine  and  on  this  recording  goes  for  a  satanic  form  of  black  metal  with  elements  of  traditional  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "I  Belong  To  Satan"  which  was  released  by  Grimm  Distribution.

  A  very  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  riffs  also  mix  in  elements  of  traditional  metal.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  mid  tempo  sections  also  adding  in  touches  of  black'n'roll  and  death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  A  lot  of  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  old  school  era  while  also  sounding  very  modern  at  the  same  time.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  one  song also  being  s  ritualistic  instrumental  that  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  and  chants  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Death  and  Darkness  themes.

  A  very  apocalyptic  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  synths  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Melodies  are  also added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  influenced  by  the  old  school  era.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  am  interlude  also  being  added  before  every  track  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  ritualistic  atmosphere.

  On  this  recording  Indesiderium  goes  for  a  very  fast,  aggressive  and  traditional  form  of  occult  black  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Luciferian,  Darkness  and  Apocalyptic  themes.

 Atmospheric  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  programmed  beats  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Elements  of  ambient  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  music  also  captures  a  very  cosmic  atmosphere  and  one  of  the  tracks  is  also  an  instrumental.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in a   great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal screams  and  the  recording  is  more  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  to  early  2000's  era  but  modern  at  the  same  time.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  songs  also  add  in a   good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Clear  singing  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along with  the  solos  and  leads  also  adding  in  a  very  aggressive  yet  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction,  a  couple  of  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Hibernum  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  fast,  aggressive  and  traditional  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Death,  Occultism  and  Satanism  themes.

  Russia/Germany's   Abigorum  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "Foretaste  Of  Justice"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath,  No  Balls,  Fetzner  Death  Records  and  Vegvisir  Distribution.

  Drum  beats  and  keyboards  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  recording  are  more  rooted  in  doom  metal.  Clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  more  of  a  melancholic  yet  melodic  style  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  some  melodies.

  Harsh  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  female  vocals  and  the  whole  album  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction,  spoken  word  samples  are  also  added  on  the  outro.  

  On  this  recording  Abigorum  moves  away  from  the  ambient  and  experimental  elements  of  earlier  releases  and  focuses  more  on  a  blackened  doom  metal  style.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Enlightenment,  Death  and  Cosmos.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Abogorum  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  'The  Blood  Flame"  "The  Call  of  The  Desperate  Mountains"  and  "Sometime  is  Now".  8  out  of  10.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  Elements  of  death  metal  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in t he  old  school  era  and  the  recording  avoids  the  use  of  bass  guitars.

Olde Scratch Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Sure, while exploring a way to articulate a unique interpretation of the Black metal genre, I found myself drawn to the specter of the 1980s satanic panic. This fervent societal hysteria, particularly fixated on the alleged presence of subliminal messages back-masked onto vinyl records, inspired me to combine record scratching with the vehemence and dark undertones of Black metal.

2.So far you have released 2 albums, musically how do they both differ from each other?

The debut album drew inspiration from a medieval treatise cataloging the seven princes of Hell. Song titles and lyrics followed a rigid, structured framework, while the music pulsed with a hellish intensity, reflecting the esoteric themes rooted in the middle ages.

The vision for the second album embraces a more expansive exploration of the occult, delving into Mesopotamia and it’s influence across human history and culture. Musically, the second endeavor strives for a more refined approach, where the instrumentation converges in a more harmonious and ritualistic blend.

3.With your music you also avoid the traditional use of metal instruments, can you tell us a little bit more about this concept?

As a self-taught musician, I utilize software that converts my voice into editable MIDI notes. This technology enables me to orchestrate a vast array of virtual instruments, forming intricate sonic patterns.

Embracing the overarching meta concept of my project, I deliberately feature the art of record scratching, focusing on creating abrasive, rhythmic passages that emulate the tremolo-picked guitar riffs and blast beat drumming inherent to Black metal.

To further enrich the soundscape, a distorted guitar synth is incorporated as a melodic device driven by the thunderous cadence of deep, bellowing drums. Finally, drone intonations herald ominous tidings, enhancing the immersion and adding layers of depth to the overall auditory journey.

4.A lot of your lyrics cover Occultism and Left Hand Path themes, how would you describe your interest in the dark arts?

Though I personally identify as an atheist, I have long been fascinated by occultism and its myriad themes. The rich tapestry of symbols, rituals, and esoteric wisdom woven throughout history has always intrigued me. The ancient framework of occult philosophies and its influence on contemporary doctrines and spiritual exploration is undeniable and worth investigating.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Olde Scratch’?

Olde Scratch is a name historically synonymous with the devil. Rooted in British and early American folklore, "Scratch" was possibly derived from the Old Norse "skratte," meaning goblin or monster. 

Beyond the obvious wordplay, choosing "Olde Scratch" subversively channels the spirit of the Satanic Panic era, a time when music was vilified for challenging societal norms and provoking moral outrage.

6.On both of the album covers you used artwork from Gustave Dore, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in his work?

Gustave Doré has always captivated me. His baroque, surreal depictions of the underworld resonate perfectly with the themes I aim to explore, adding a timeless, otherworldly essence to my creative journey.

7.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo? 

I’m open to working with other artists, whether on joint projects or splits. I have reached out to a few without success, so, we’ll see.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest? 

I have been looking; however, several inquiries have yet to be addressed, and there has been no interest up to now, but  I remain hopeful.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

I have fans across North America and throughout Europe, including countries like Great Britain, Portugal, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Finland, Ukraine, Greece, Bulgaria, Denmark, and Serbia. My reach even extends to Brazil and all the way down under in Australia. I’m truly proud and grateful for this incredible worldwide support.

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

I am eager to continue harnessing the art of record scratching in innovative and unconventional ways. My goal is to transcend its traditional boundaries to craft auditory experiences that are both captivating and inexplicable.

Simultaneously, I plan to delve deeper into the realms of the occult and esoteric beliefs. With This fusion of sound and mysticism, I seek to create immersive, transformative music resonating with symbolism and an otherworldly allure.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I deeply appreciate the experimentation of modern jazz, the powerful energy of old school metal, and the distinctive, atmospheric beats of downtempo. My interests also extend to the more intense realms of blackened industrial and the unrelenting force of bestial death metal, complemented by the avant-garde artistry of Björk.

Recently, I have been particularly inspired by the evocative sounds of the Black metal underground. Bands such as Black Curse, Onw and Spectral Wound have left a significant impression on me.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

My journey with Black metal has been a reflection on the interplay between chaos and structure, disrupting traditional genre confines and unsettling expectations. Blending raw intensity with the unexpected texture of vinyl scratching was not just a creative choice, but an exploration of how contrasting elements can coexist and enhance one another.
