Fyrgast are a solo project from Sweden that plays a very old school form of black metal and this is a review of his self released 2022 album "As Darkness Swept The Lands".
A very dark synth orientated intro starts off the album before going into more of a heavier and melodic direction. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while t he faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the music more of a raw feeling.
A lot of the music is also very heavily rooted in the old school era while the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with some death metal growls also being utilized at times.
Clean playing is also added on a couple of the tracks as well as synths also making a return as the album progresses. One of the songs is also very long and epic in length and the album closes with an instrumental. The production sounds very dark, raw and and lo-fi while the lyrics cover darkness, death, philosophy and nature themes.
In my opinion Fyrgast are a very great sounding old school black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Shores To Infinity" "Commanding The Storms" and "The Chains Shall Be broken". 8 out of 10.
