California's Sutekh Hexen have returned with a new recording which shows the music going for a mixture of atmospheric black metal, harsh noise, experimental and dark ambient and this is a review of their 2025 album "Primeval" which will be released on January 24th as a joint effort between Cyclic law and Breath Sun Bone Blood.
Stringed instruments start off the album while also adding in a very avant garde and ritualistic atmosphere. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams mixed in with a few whispers along with the album also adding in a lot of acoustic instruments and elements of dark ambient and the recording also has its experimental moments.
Drones are also added into certain sections of the recording while some tracks also add in a small amount of field recordings. All of the songs also sound very different from each other along with some of the album also adding in a more atmospheric approach. Distorted noises can also be heard briefly and when percussion is utilized it also gives the music more of a tribal touch as well as one song also adding in a harsh noise wall.
On this recording Sutekh Hexen takes a grim black metal vocal style and mixes it with dark ambient, ritual, experimental and harsh noise to create a very diverse album. The production sounds very dark and lo-fi while the lyrics cover witchcraft, demonology and mysticism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Sutekh Hexen and if you are a fan of atmospheric black metal, harsh noise, experimental and dark ambient, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Malediction" "Modd Skull" and "The Clarion Call". 8 out of 10.
