Where The Light Fades Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

We are Where The Light Fades, Black Metal band from Toronto, Canada. The band was a solo act formed in 2020 while I (Sergio) was in Astaroth Incarnate. Once that band ended, some of the members came to help me bring this band to life and did a few shows with me back in 2022. Now with a new line up, we continue to evolve as a band and sound. This EP showcases where we are now musically, compared to our lo-fi beginnings.

2.You have a new ep coming out towards the end of the month, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

With our new EP, we went to an actual studio to bring a more clear recording of our songs yet still trying to sound as raw as we can. The songs are tuned lower than the original demo we did back in 2020. There's more melodies as well as heavy bass and no drum machine playing.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer release and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

We dive into mostly grief and sorrow people would often feel when they're lost and find no hope in sight. There is a darkness in each one of us, you could either dwell on it or find a way to overcome it. We also discuss the topic of reflecting upon yourself. One day you’re young and carefree and then you grow older and have all these responsibilities left on your shoulders. I would describe my progress as a songwriter as becoming more realistic with my lyrics. The songs I write should be more of what we all experience as people, bringing our audience close to one another. To show that we are not alone in our darkness.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Where The Light Fades'?

Imagine being in a dark room with nothing but a lit candle, soon that candle will go out and then you’re left in the darkness. Only you can decide what your next step is, stay or find your way out back to the light. The band’s name is about finding your path out of your inner darkness.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new ep cover?

The main theme was always based in a forest that we call the Black Creek. In the artwork we have three figures. We have a man who we call our present self looking into his reflection in the river who we call our past. Behind our past and present is our future looking at them in a dark cloak lost within the Black Creek. The songs and artwork both align with each other with the themes of growth within ourselves.

6.Originally the band started out as a solo project but has expanded into a trio on the new release, what was the decision behind expanding the line up?

I find as a solo artist, there are things I can't express musically that I know others can express better than me. It helps to have other people throw ideas to one another to see what works and what doesn't. Performing live as a solo artist in this genre is hard, with members who will stay committed helps the longevity of the band as well.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

I feel like our first two performances we had back in 2022, and our show opening for Mizmor in 2024 were our best shows so far. I felt we played our best and we had the best crowd response for those performances. We don't try to play flashy nor any theatrics, just raw emotion and feeling the music we’re playing and feeding off the energy from the crowd.
