Bourn Ultra are a band from Los Angeles, California that plays a mixture of black and death metal and this is a review of their self released 2021 ep "Skull Throne Inheritor".
A very fast and brutal sound starts off the ep along with a great amount of blast beats while the vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams. When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the songs more of a raw feeling and the music also adds in a great amount of 90's influences.
Elements of death metal can also be heard quite a bit throughout the recording while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them along with the riffs also adding in a good amount of melody as well as one of the tracks being very long and epic in length and clean playing is also added on the closing song which is also an instrumental.
Bourn Ultra plays a musical style that takes black and death metal and mixes them together to create a sound of their own. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover the writings of H.P Lovecraft and Cosmic Horror themes.
In my opinion Bourn Ultra are a very great sounding mixture of black and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Of Natron Blood" and "The Crouched one Rises". 8 out of 10.
