Minas Morgul are a band from Germany that has a history that goes back to the mid 90's and on this recording moves away from the melodic pagan blackened death metal style of previous releases and focuses more on a 90's Norwegian influenced style of black metal and this is a review of their 2023 album "Nebelung" which will be released in June by Trollzorn Records.
Rain sounds and cello's start off the album before going into more of a heavier and melodic musical direction. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the album more of a raw feeling.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the songs also add in a great amount of old school Norwegian influences. All of the musical instruments on the album also have a very powerful sound to them and the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style.
Clear pagan vocals can also be heard in certain sections of the recording along with one song also introducing keyboards onto the album. Spoken word parts can also be heard on a couple of songs as well as one track introducing clean playing onto the album, acoustic guitars can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in German and cover humanity and its relationship to Mother Earth.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Minas Morgul and if you are a fan of pagan black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Nebulung" "Inter Stellas" and "Lethargie". 8 out of 10.
