Veriluola Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Veriluola was started hastily without much thought put behind it, but the core idea was to just create an extreme metal band with the mindset that we're not gonna focus on any specific genre, but rather combining elements of whatever music we were currently enjoying and combining these ideas into a full composition.

2.In May you have your first full length coming out, musically how does it differ from your previous demo?

Some of the songs like the first one are fairly similar to the demo, but generally we expanded a bit more into death metal realms and we're most likely going to continue along this line.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

We explore some ideas such as death, tyranny, revenge, the occult, greed and violence in a fictional historical or medieval setting. Writing lyrics is a fun process after fleshing out all the instrumentation, so we like to just throw out random ideas and then see what we can do with it.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Veriluola'?

There's not much of a cool meaning or story behind it, but I thought the imagery of a crimson bloody cave seemed sick for the band name and went with it (Veriluola means blood cave in Finnish).

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

It's probably obvious after explaining the band name, but it's essentially just showing the image that I already had in my head when creating the band. The point of the artwork for me is to represent the music, and I think it does a pretty good job of creating that esoteric atmosphere.

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

We have a really good work flow together with me and Malus both bringing unique ideas while still agreeing on what the general goals are, so for now it will remain a duo. There's no plans for live shows, but we'll expand if we ever want to do that.

7.The band members live in the United States and Finland, what impact does this have on the musical style that you play?

It really does not impact the general musical style. Obviously Malus brings his own influence, but we are both well-versed in metal from all over the world, and take influences from everything without specific bias for our own countries.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

The reaction has been surprisingly positive, especially for the demo which was my first experience of releasing metal. The album is a bit more mature in it's songwriting, so hopefully we'll see a similar reaction to it.

9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that the band members are a part?

I'm personally not a part of any other project currently, but I do have some plans. Malus has a solo project that goes by "Apokatastasis", and I can very honestly recommend the debut album "Consecratory Secretion" from it. It's a very insane combination of brutal death metal and melodic black metal and just great fun to listen to.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I'm not sure, but we'll most likely stick to the original idea of not sticking to any specific genre and just doing whatever feels right. We'll keep some of the most defining elements, but anything else might change.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Some of the original major influences were Rotting Christ, Mortuary Drape, Grand Belial's Key and Blood Urn. These bands especially fascinated me because they sounded different from usual black metal and death metal, and that's why I was inspired to start my own band. I don't listen to a lot of music nowadays, but I enjoy a lot of traditional metal like Satan and Manilla Road, and I've been listening to a decent amount of death metal like Dead Congregation and Adramelech. For future releases I'll most likely take more influences from the bands that I'm currently listening to.

12.How would you describe your views on Occultism?

I have an interest in it, but I don't know a lot about it and it's not relevant in my life.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I can't think of anything else, but thank you for the questions!
