Baagak/Plague/Obsidian Fortress Productions/2024 Demo Review

Baagak  are  a  solo  project  from  Vancouver  B.C,  Canada  that  plays  a  very  raw  from  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  demo  "Plague"  which  was  released  by  Obsidian  Fortress  Productions.

Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  demo  along  with  some  clean  playing  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

A  small  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  apocalyptic  sounds  and  the  demo  also  shows  an  influence  of  both  the  modern  and  old  school  era's  of  the  genre,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  finally  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

Baagak  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw,  harsh,  aggressive  and  traditional  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  hate  and  sorrow  themes.

In  my  opinion  Baagak  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Burned  In  Effigy"  and  "Nawadizo".  8  out  of  10.

Irae/Promiscuous Fire/Signal Rex/2025 EP Review

Portugal's  Irae  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  old  school  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  ep  "Promiscuous  Fire"  which  will  be  released  in  2025  by  Signal  Rex.

A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  as  well a s  a  couple  of  tracks  also  being  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  music  is  heavily  rooted  in  the  old  school  era.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  and  the  whole  ep  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.

On  this  recording  Irae  plays  a  very  fast  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  Portuguese  and  English  and  cover  Satanism,  Occultism  and  the  End  Of  Humanity/

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Irae  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Curse  Of  Lael"  and  "Endless  Circle".  8  out  of  10.

Hyeno/Arena/Shortlist Records/2024 EP Review

Hyeno  are  a  duo  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  doomy  mixture  of  black  metal  and  industrial  and  this  is  a  review  of  their    2024  ep  "Arena"  which  was  released b y  Shortlist  Records.

Apocalyptic  industrial  style  beats  start  off  the  ep  while  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding  at  times.  Synths  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  also  sticking  to  an  instrumental  direction  and  the  distorted  noises  also  bring  in  elements  of  black  metal.

The  slower  sections  of  the  recording  also  show  an  influence  of  doom  metal  while  both  of  the  tracks  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length.  The  second  song  also  shows  the  music  also  getting  more  ritualistic  and  tribal  along  with  the  track  sticking  to  more  of  an  underground  electronic  direction.

Hyeno  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black,  doom  metal,  industrial  and  underground  electronic  music  to  create  something  very  original  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  also  sounds  very  dark.

In  my  opinion  Hyeno  is  a  very  great  sounding  doomy  mixture  of  black  metal  and  industrial  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Katabasis".  8  out of  10.

Rheinkaos Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

I would describe Rheinkaos as an avant-garde black metal project with strong progressive metal influences. We formed in 2007 and released a demo CD in 2008, which garnered some positive reviews. Although we began working on our first full-length album shortly after, various challenges delayed its completion. This year, however, we released two new songs, which I believe represent the essence of our sound: a blend of intense, fast riffs, as well as doom-y passages, dissonant yet accessible melodies, all captured with a clean, polished production that I hope will appeal to a wide range of listeners.

2.Can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recordings?

My intent has always been to craft avant-garde black metal that draws inspiration from bands like Dodheimsgard and Ulver, while also incorporating elements of progressive metal, akin to Fates Warning and Cynic. I like to write with dynamics, both in terms of intensity and musical styles, and I think  that the songs reflect a broad spectrum of my influences. At the same time, I strive to create music with rich layers, textures, and melodies that encourage deeper exploration with each listen.

3.Until 2024 there was no music released since 2008, can you tell us a little bit more about the hiatus?

After the release of our demo in 2008, we began recording our first full album at Fragile Studios in Athens. Unfortunately, due to budget limitations, the album remained unfinished. While I continued to work on the project independently—mixing and recording the tracks—a series of setbacks, such as the financial crisis and the decline of MySpace, did not allow us to move the project forward. Eventually, I relocated to the Netherlands, where I struggled to assemble a band capable of performing Rheinkaos' complex music. As a result, the project remained dormant for several years.

4.In 2010 there was an unfinished album being worked on, are there any plans to finally release it in the future?

The album we were working on in 2010 was intended to feature three tracks from our 2008 demo, along with four new compositions. Two of these new songs are now part of the recently released EP, so there are still a couple of tracks that remain nearly ready to be shared with the world. Given the intricate nature of our music—not just in composition, but also in production—it will take time to finalize these recordings. However, I do intend to release them when the time is right.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Rheinkaos?

The name Rheinkaos is derived from Reinkaos, the final album by Dissection, which is often interpreted as “the return of chaos and acausal existence.” In truth, I was more drawn to the sound and resonance of the word than its original meaning. That said, I wanted to distance the project from Dissection's controversial history and ideology, so I adapted the name to reflect my own artistic vision.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new ep cover?

The stunning artwork for our new EP was created by Vadim Karasov, a talented Ukrainian digital collage artist. We actually collaborated with two other artists prior to Vadim, but neither quite captured the ethereal, mystical, and awe-inspiring essence that we were looking for. The moment I saw Vadim’s work, I knew it was the perfect fit for our EP’s concept. The cover perfectly encapsulates the theme of All My Being is a Dark Verse, both in its atmosphere and its visual depth.

7.On the recordings you work as a duo, was there ever any plans to expand into a full line up?

Yes, we do plan to expand the band in order to bring the music to life in a live setting. Our goal is to perform both in the Netherlands and in our home country of Greece. While we’ve enjoyed working as a duo on the recordings, we feel that bringing in additional musicians will help us fully realize the complex nature of Rheinkaos’ music.

8.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored with the music?

Our lyrics often center around an intimate dialogue with God, contemplating the futility of our existence within the context of a vast, chaotic, and ever-expanding universe. While the themes may align with traditional metal subject matter, this direct conversation with the unknown feels both empowering and liberating.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

Overall, I think fans of metal, in general, have embraced Rheinkaos. Our music contains elements from various genres, so listeners with diverse tastes can likely find something to connect with. We’re genuinely happy with the response we’ve received. That being said, traditional black metal fans—much like any audience with a deep attachment to a specific form of art—tend to be more focused on preserving the “purity” of the genre and its classic structures. For us, however, black metal is merely one of the many creative tools we use to shape our sound.

10.Are there any plans for newer music in the future?

If we do pursue new music, it will likely involve a significant shift in the Rheinkaos sound—perhaps even something more stripped down. The process of writing and producing this kind of music is extremely time-consuming. For instance, the two songs on our EP took two years to complete, from the initial riff to the final mastering stage. Hopefully, this would not affect the essence of our music though.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

As previously mentioned, bands like Dodheimsgard, Ulver, Arcturus, Fates Warning, and Cynic have had a significant influence on our sound.  But while writing the songs, we definitely integrated elements from whatever we were listening to these days ranging from video game soundtracks like the works of Tomáš Dvořák to the progressive jazz-pop band Reign of Kindo. These days, I find myself drawn to music across genres, but I've learned to recognize a certain authenticity in metal that resonates with me more strongly. Bands like Hail Spirit Noir and Wormwood are currently among my favorites.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I simply hope that listeners will give our music a chance and come to appreciate the care and passion we’ve poured into it. Every note, every layer, every idea has been carefully crafted with the intention of creating something meaningful. We’re grateful for those who connect with it, and we look forward to sharing more in the future.

Burial Heist Interview

1.For those that have never heard of your before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

J: I guess that means everyone since we’re a new band with our first demo literally to be released in December. What can I say? It started when a close friend of mine showed me the first Runeboy demo and said “J, I’m thinking this is something for you”. He made the right assumption as it triggered me almost instantly to take my first western guitar I ever bought and start blurting out primitive stomping riffs. Yeah, that’s right, it was supposed to be acoustic at first but things took a turn as they usually do.

I added some floortom – enter Neofolk vibes – because I’m not a drummer and then asked T. to come up with some bass lines, he told me that he immediately heard what he wanted to do and also how it should sound like. I don’t argue with people like him who know exactly what they’re doing. Black metal vocals because fuck it. Then we gave our complete mess to J.D.B. who did a fine job as per usual making it sound the way it does now. I’m pleased with the result.

2.You have a demo coming out later in December, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

J: I believe the previous answer covered this quite well.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

J: The lyrics are inspired by diverse poets but mostly Balkan ones. There is intense melancholy to be found in their writings I hardly read anywhere else. Not pessimistic nor nihilistic but truly, deeply melancholic. I enjoyed using the contrasting ideas of dealing with loss and death in a sincere manner written down so well already, and the emotionless banditry in one concept.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Burial Heist'?

J: According to the Cambridge dictionary – Burial: The act of putting a dead body into the ground, or the ceremony connected with this. Heist: A crime in which valuable things are taken illegally and often violently from a place or person. The music and lyrics inspired the name, not visa versa.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the demo cover?

J: It’s the floor plan of a cemetery. Telling you which one would be stupid, the spoils shall be ours! When one intends to steal bones and/or other paraphernalia or funerary decorations, you must study the surroundings, learn the quickest way in and out. For this demo we used this map but did leave out the vital instructions. There are other ways though to go about and raid a cemetery, google ‘Jules Roets’ and learn from the master.

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you

 prefer to remain a duo?

J: To be honest, it has already crossed my mind but we’ll think about that at a later point when the first dust has settled. In the future when we perhaps decide to go live we’ll at least need one more villain to fill the ranks. An outfit of three must do the trick, everyone knows, more is asking for trouble!

7.Are any of the band members currently involved with or have been involved with any other bands or musical projects?

J: T. and myself are also doing things in La Merde, Kosmokrator, Serpent Mass, Ish Kerioth etc..

8.Can you tell us a little bit more about the masks you wear in the promo pics?

J: Thieves and bandits wear masks, it has always been this way!

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your recordings by fans of underground music?

J: Since the digital release and at the time I’m writing this, just one review has reached us, and it came from you.

10.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

J: We’ve just managed to round up material written for 2 demo’s, I’m not thinking of an album just now.

It could go any way, one direction could be to focus more on the punk side and recruit a third member and go live, we’ll see.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

J: Not gonna lie, Runeboy was a massive influence and I’m really happy it didn’t turn out to be a cheesy copy but that it got a life of its own. Nowadays I’m listening non stop to Gilles Binchois, Johannes Ockeghem and Walther von der Vogelweide, also Reverorum Ib Malacht and Dead Congregation.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

J: Stay clear from the cemeteries, we’re not done yet! Also, go check Haunted by Ill Angels’ new batch of tapes and their back catalogue, if you can’t find anything that will scratch your itch, you should rethink your life choices.

Salacious Gods Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

After the release of our latest album ‘Oalevluuk’ we did a few shows. The album and the shows were very well received. After that we wrote some new material of which an EP will be released soon. Actually we would like to do more shows but due to circumstances that has not happened yet. In the meantime we continue writing new material for the next album which will be called ‘Kwelhekse’ and we are preparing for our next show in March.

2.Recently you have released a compilation celebrating 30 years, can you tell us a little bit more about this release?

Live recordings were made of some of the performances we did for the release of ‘Oalevluuk’. Then someone brought to my attention that we are celebrating our 30th anniversary this year. That was of course a great opportunity to do something with the live recordings. That is how the idea came about to release an anniversary album. Then the process started to mix and master the live recordings, to select and master live recordings from the past and to select and re-master some demo and promo tracks. We kept all that in our own hands. We wanted to include a lot of photos from the past in the book, but we also had to make a small selection. It is a big task to capture 30 years in an album. We worked on it with conviction and it brought back a lot of memories. During the process you learn a lot about your personal past, the friendships (not only between the band members but also with people you get to know over the years through the band). And also your individual strengths and weaknesses. The band has been part of my life for 30 years. I have learned so many things through the band that I can also apply in my private life. The label Hammerheart indicated that they only want to release full-length albums and no EPs or live albums. Fortunately, we were able to work together with Wolfkult Religion.

3.Musically how do you feel the band has evolved over the last 3 decades?

When we started out in 1994, none of us had music lessons or anything like that. We didn’t even know how to tune our own instruments. However, we were so eager to develop our dark art that we started writing good songs very quickly. With the arrival of our former drummer Grä Gmorg, a rapid musical development immediately followed because he is a classically trained instrumentalist. At that time, we found it important to create atmospheres through our music and to present our technical development. The first two albums are both in the same vein, with the second album ‘Sunnevot’ having more emphasis on musical technical progress. After that, there were some line-up changes and we lost the keyboard player for example and got a guitarist instead. By that time musical technical development was less relevant to us and our taste developed more and more in an ‘in your fucking face’ direction. The third album ‘Piene’ therefore sounds completely different from the previous albums. I think the last album is more or less a combination of the first album ‘Askengris’ and the third album ‘Piene’. The newly written material was developed together with Njirrebrod. This material that is yet to be released will probably go back even more to our roots. We want to create more atmospheres and at the same time be rawer than ever. Njirrebrod has an unerring sense of which direction we want to go with this.

4.Your earlier material had more of a symphonic style while the new material is more aggressive sounding, what was the decision behind going into more of a rawer direction?

As stated in the answer to the previous question it was more of a natural development. Through line-up changes and changes of taste the music evolved in a different direction. However, we want to merge the old symphonic sound a bit more with the new, rawer sound.

5.A lot of your lyrics cover occult themes, can you tell us a little bit more about how this interest has evolved over the years?

On the first two albums we mainly expressed our interest in myths and legends. The third album was mainly about aggression and violence. The last album is clearly the most occult-oriented album. Occultism has always been the common thread that connected all our music, but this was most strongly expressed on the last album. In order to complete the lyrics of this album, we read a lot and deliberately misinterpreted texts from books in order to gain different insights. We also integrated our own dreams and fantasies into this and created our own rituals. That is why the lyrics of the last album are quite personal. We will therefore not go into some things any further and leave it to the listener's interpretation.

6.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored over the years with your music?

Mostly about old myths and legends from our own culture to which we give our own interpretation by using our imagination. Witches' Sabbaths, religious murders, blood sacrifices, 'witte wieven', rituals, battles are all part of our history and are in our blood.

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The cover design of the album ‘Oalevluuk’ represents a transformation to a new identity. We had a lot going against us in the period from about 2008 until the release of that album. Because of everything that has worked against us in the last period, you only become stronger as a band. The person on the cover artwork undergoes the same transformation process. He has literally initiated a ritual of transformation. For us as a band, this is sometimes literal and physical, but sometimes also figurative and symbolic. From light to dark, from weak to strong. This process of transformation often goes in different phases: sometimes symbolic, sometimes physical. By gaining knowledge in different ways, by simply reading books or a period of fasting or staying in nature for a while. Sometimes letting your anger flare up or by consciously experiencing pain. Everything to come out better on the other side.

For the cover design of the anniversary album, we did not want to use a clichéd live photo. Firstly because it is not just a live album (after all, there are also studio recordings on it) and secondly because it is meant as an anniversary album and not just a live album. The subject of the artwork is an extension of the cover artwork theme of ‘Oalevluuk’. The entity on the cover of ‘A Chrestomathy of Blasphemous Supremacy’ undergoes, just like on the cover of ‘Oalevluuk’, a transformation depicted in an abstract form. This represents the transformation that we as a band and as individuals have undergone in the last 30 years

8.From 2005 to 2023 there was no music being released, can you tell us a little bit more about the long break and the decision behind returning to writing newer music?

We had material ready for an album right after ‘Piene’ but that material was more in line with that album while we actually wanted to take things to a higher level in terms of the atmosphere and intensity of the music. At the same time, the technical developments with regard to recording music did not stand still and we started sending ready-made songs to each other via the internet. This did mean that a recording facility had to be set up. Because this was still primitive compared to current techniques, writing and recording the new songs took a very long time. In the meantime, band members had moved all over the Netherlands so that a rehearsal space in Zwolle was the most centrally located and rehearsals only took place a few times a year. Just when we were ready to study the new material, some members decided to quit. Mainly for personal reasons. After that, it turned out to be difficult to find suitable musicians for a while. When we finally found suitable band members, we also had to look for a new rehearsal space several times. In addition, band members have been injured so that they were unable to play for a while, recordings have been lost and more of that. In the meantime, the recording facility has grown and we have finished the recordings and the mix of ‘Oalevluuk’ and also of ‘A Chrestomathy of Blasphemous Supremacy’ here. Salacious Gods now consists of Lafawijn, Swerc, Njirrebrod, Fjildslach and Iezelzweard. The material on ‘Oalevluuk’ is therefore not new material. It was written in the period from about 2007 to 2010. In the meantime, we have written new material. We hope to release a few songs in 2025 and thus show our new direction.

9.Out of all the shows and tours the band has played over the years which one stands out the most?

That is definitely the show we did in Belgrade. That show was part of the ‘Goat Guts over Europe tour’ that we did with Loits, Behexen and Horna in 2003. It was uncertain whether that show could go ahead because of the war. The war was formally over but there were still skirmishes going on. We were the first extreme metal bands to play there since the outbreak of the war. We were received incredibly hospitably and the audience was insane! When we entered the city and saw the bombed and shelled buildings, we found ourselves in a very special atmosphere. The next day we had actually planned a show in Sarajevo but it could not go ahead because it was still too unsafe there. A few weeks later there was news that snipers were active in Belgrade again.

I also have to think of a show in ‘Zwolle’, a city close to home. It was election time and some Christian parties did not want music with so much anti-Christian violence to be performed in their municipality and wanted to ban our performance. Therefore, they had submitted a written request to the Dutch parliament to ban it and in addition they had organized a prayer meeting. This seemed completely comical to us. We were also surprised by the media attention that arose. Various national and regional TV and radio stations had sent reporters to interview us and representatives of the ‘opposing party’ the politicians and Christian leaders. In front of the club people stood with banners on which was painted, for example, ‘Jesus saves’. These people have completely lost all sense of reality. But the show went perfectly fine.

10.Do you have any touring or show plans for 2025?

In March we have a show planned in Germany with Darkened Nocturnal Slaughtercult and we will bring Kjeld as support. At the same time we are focusing on the release of an EP, writing new material and we hope to do some more shows.

11.The compilation was released on 'WolfKult Religion', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

The album ‘Oalevluuk’ was released by ‘Hammerheart Records’. We wanted to release the anniversary album with them as well, but they only release full-length albums. ‘WolfKult Religion’ had already indicated that they would like to work with us after the release of ‘Oalevluuk’. So it was a logical step to start working with them. It is a new label and has a smaller outreach than ‘Hammerheart Records’, but they are doing very well and the collaboration is going extremely well. He used to order albums from a label that was owned by our former bassist’s brother. So he knows us from way back.

12.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your newer music by fans of black metal?

Incredibly good!! I have the feeling that this is the first album that really turned out the way we envisioned it and that was also seriously picked up by the scene. The world has changed enormously since the release of the previous album ‘Piene’. And also the taste and viewpoints of people in the scene. The material of ‘Oalevluuk’ was written in the period around 2007 – 2010. In that sense the material is also somewhat outdated and no longer representative of what we do now. There have also been some line-up changes since then. Therefore we want to release new material as soon as possible to show the new direction we are going.

13.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Lugubre, Orewoet and Infidel Reich are currently on hold and Standvast no longer exists. Kjeld, Iku-Turso, Mortifero and Terdor are doing well!

14.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We want to combine the rawness of the later albums with the atmospheres of the first albums. The new written material sounds very promising!

15.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

Personally I still listen to a lot of the classics within the genre and a lot of somber dark ambient and dungeon synth. However, we also keep a close eye on the underground and new exciting bands and projects are always emerging from the underground. Not only do we closely follow the Finnish black metal scene, but also our local Dutch Black metal scene is thriving with great bands, like Kjeld, Cirith Gorgor and Sammath to name just a few.

16.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you for this interview.

Cursed Cemetery/Magma Transmigration/Dusktone/2024 Full Length Review

Cursed  Cemetery  are  a  band  from  Romania  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  ritualistic  mixture  of  black  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "Magma  Transmigration"  which  was  released  by  Dusktone.

A  very  slow,  dark  and  heavy  funeral  doom  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Clear  ritualistic  chants  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  songs along  with  most  of  the  harsh  vocals  being  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  some  of  the  slower  riffing  also  has  its  repetitive  moments.  Atmospheric  sounding  synths  and  clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  some  guitar  amp  effects  also  being  utilized  briefly  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  the  whole  album  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction,  clean  playing  is  also  added  on  a  couple  of  the  songs  and  blast  beats  are  also  added  towards  the  end.

On  this  recording  Cursed  Cemetery  takes  an  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  a  ritualistic  form  of  funeral  doom  metal  to  create  a  very  dark,  heavy  and  slow  album.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  suicide,  occultism,  physical  and  mental  torture.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cursed  Cemetery  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  ritualistic  black  and  funeral  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Magma  Transmigration"  and  "Udva".  8  out  of  10.

Goatflesh/Self Titled/2024 Full Length Review

Goatflesh  are  a  band  from  Ukraine  that  plays  a  mixture  of  war  and  bestial  black/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  and  self  titled  2024  album.

A  very  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  bestial  growls  and  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  very  fast, raw  and  brutal  war  metal  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.

Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  a  lot  of  the  music  shows  an  influence  of  the  old  school  era  of  the  genre.  Most  of  the  riffing  is  also  done  on  power  chords  along  with  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  angry  shouts  and  synths  and  all  of  the  songs  also  avoid  the  use  of  any  solos  or  leads.

Goatflesh  plays  a  musical  style  that  goes  back  to  the  classic  era  of  war  and  bestial  black/death  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anti  Christianity,  Blasphemy,  Occultism,  War,  Death  and  hatred  themes.

In  my  opinion  Goatflesh  are  a  very  great  sounding  bestial  mixture  of  war,  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Primal  Sanctify"  "Goatlord  Revelation"  "Nuclear  Aftermath  Morbid  Chant"  and  "God  of  Pyre".  8  out  of  10.

Asacris interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the solo project?

The project was born in my mind back in 2014. At that time, I had already started to think about it and to compose something, but I didn't think about it seriously. And only a couple of years later, when I had grown up musically and was ready to move from thoughts to actions, I realized that I could try to publish some tracks. And in 2020, I recorded an EP called «Tabula Rasa». And at that time, the project was called "Night By Day Light". You can check it out on my Bandcamp!

The lyrics in «Tabula Rasa» were in English because at that time I was trying to focus on Western and European artists. Even now I prefer foreign music more than music in my native language. Because I grew up and was brought up as a musician, listening to foreign performers. But years later I realized that it is much easier for me to write lyrics and convey ideas to the listener in my native language.

Now «Asacris» is a melodic black metal project that combines melody and aggressive sound, which in my opinion allows for more accurate expression of deep emotions and experiences in their radical form.

2.Recently you have released a new full length, musically how does it differ from your previous ep?

Well, as I said above, the lyrics became in Russian. In addition to the language, the content of the lyrics also changed as a result of changes in the concept and creativity. A rethinking and musical approach brought changes in general, so the changes also affected the lyrics. As for the musical part, I think it has become more melodic and technical.

3.The project has been around since 2014 but so far there has only been an ep an one full length, can you tell us a little bit more about the long delay in between releases?

Probably the key thing is some life circumstances. Also, at some point I had financial difficulties, and the realization of quality music in our country takes a lot of money. But from now on I hope that, when possible, I will please my listeners more often and there will be no more such long pauses.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored so far with the music?

Previously, the lyrics were typical black metal lyrics, with some occult touches and reflections on chaosophy, the left-hand path and the like.

At the moment, the lyrics represent something more in my understanding, because they are deeper and touch upon personal experiences. It also touches on broader psychological and personal aspects. Biblical motifs and even ancient Greek myths have become part of the current lyrics. Some lyrics are a kind of narrative, for example the track «Гибельная Грань» is a tale of Cain and his betrayal. And such a track as the «Мёртвое Царство» tells the story of a man who left this world, he goes along the Styx River flowing in the underground kingdom of Hades. Where he is ferried by Erebus, which is the personification of eternal darkness, and Nyx - the goddess of the night. And then, waking up, he realizes that he is among the living and it was all just illusion.

5.Origianlly the project was known as 'Night By Daylight', what was the cause of the name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Asacris'?

The reason for changing the name was that I myself have undergone significant changes on a personal level. I changed my approach, changed my view and rethought everything. That is why the title "Tabula Rasa" in the EP 2020 has now sparkled with new colors. The debut work of 2020 was a blank slate, which was reflected in the title "Tabula Rasa". Our human individual is born without innate or built-in mental content, that is, a blank slate. His knowledge resource is entirely built from experience and sensory perception. For example, for the ancient Romans, "tabula rasa" meant an empty space. "To make tabula rasa out of something" is equivalent to reducing something to nothing. Literally - a clean, scraped board, that is, an empty board. Accordingly - in fact, I have not said or done anything until today! I just opened an empty board!

Asacris means "rejected" (from the shrine) in Latin. I realized that this name resonates in my heart, my character, my personality and in my mind. It's a reflection of my experience and thoughts.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The cover is the personification of the fact that even if you were pierced three times through, but there is still light in you that you are able to bring to this world. And even death that raised its scythe over you, and the snake and original sin tempt you, you still don't need to give up...

7.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

I compose music and lyrics by myself, and of course record vocals. For the rest I resort to the help of session musicians.

8.The new album was released through 'Atra Anduin Records', how di you get on contact with this label?

I got to know «Atra Anduin Records» through mutual friends and acquaintances. And I want to express special gratitude to the leader of "Atra Haeresis" Alexander Dorokhin, who helped me with this release.

But I was released there only in digital format. I have a plan to be released on CD in the spring 2025. Negotiations are already underway with another label for these purposes.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of melodic black metal?

It is difficult to answer this question at this moment because too little time has passed to collect any statistics. I would give a more specific answer to this question some time later. And if we take the reaction that I have already heard from listeners, then in general this reaction is positive.

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

The future is something you create with your own hands. If you give up, you give in to fate. Believe in yourself and you can build the future you want. The future must be laid in the present. It's called a plan. Without it, nothing in the world can be good. Therefore, I see only growth, progress and a plan to move forward!

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Oddly enough, this is the most difficult question and it’s very difficult to give a specific answer to it, because there are a huge number of bands and styles that influenced me. Starting from the second wave of Norwegian black metal, ending with popular alternative music.

Despite my strict adherence to black metal as a musician, as a listener I can listen to anything and be inspired by it. In any musical style you can find inspiration and learn something!

If I were to single out something from black metal that I really liked in recent years, I would highlight: "Watain - The Agony & Ecstasy of Watain", "A.M.S.G. - Hostis Universi Generis", "Paragon Impure - Sade", "Regarde Les Hommes Tomber - Ascension" and "Behemoth - Opvs Contra Natvram" - interesting work. And finally, I will probably add to the list what I listened to most recently, "Nocturnal Depression - Perpétuelle éclipse Nocturnal Depression", especially the track "Waltzing Among Graves", this is truly something incredible! The list could go on for a very long time, but I'll stop here.

2.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Music is the language of the soul. It reveals the secret of life, bringing peace and eliminating discords. Music expresses what cannot be expressed in words and what cannot be kept silent about.

It is a way of life, a way of thinking, it is a tool for expressing life and everything that matters! I wish freedom and love to everyone, especially to those who have not yet found themselves - do it! Do your will, do not listen to anyone, do not look for authorities, obey only the inner voice, go forward at all costs and you will reach your goals! Let this be the law, and love under your will is the key to open all doors!
