Matru-Zebu are a band from Finland that plays a very primitive and malicious form of black metal and this is a review of their 2025 demo "Blood Cries With Sorrow" which was released by Ancient Culte.
A very powerful bass guitar sound starts off the demo along with some drum beats a few seconds later before adding in some heavier riffing. Vocals are mostly grim black metal screams while the synths also add in a very lo-fi atmosphere when they are utilized and the solos and leads are also done in a very dark and melodic style.
When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. A lot of the recording is also very heavily rooted in the old school era and the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts with the main focus being on more of a mid tempo direction, chants can also be heard at times.
Matru-Zebu plays a style of black metal that is very raw, lo-fi and old school sounding. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover shamanic iconoclasm and spiritual atavism.
In my opinion Matru-Zebu are a very great sounding raw and old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Storm The Gates Of Eden" and "Wings over Tartarus". 8 out of 10.
