This is a review of a split album between Texas's Cara Neir and Wildspeaker called "Guilt And His Reflection" which will be released in September on cassette by broken Limbs and we will start off the review with Cara Neir a band that has had plenty of material reviewed in this zine and plays a mixture of black metal, grind, post rock, screamo and punk.
Their side of the split starts out with a distorted amp sound before adding in growling vocals and aggressive yet clean guitars and the music also brings in a great amount of post rock elements and after awhile black metal screams along with blast beats are added into the music and all of the musical instruments sound very powerful on their side of the split.
Elements of screamo can be heard in some of the songs and after awhile the music speeds up at times and also brings in a more raw style of black metal and when guitar leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic fashion and there is also a brief use of melodic singing and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Cara Neir creates another recording that has a lot of black metal roots while also mixing in a lot of screamo, grind, post rock and punk elements which also makes the songs stand out, the production sounds very powerful while the lyrics cover post apocalyptic themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Cara Neir and if you are a fan of screamo influenced post black metal, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The View Through This Fog" and "Ego Eats Man".
Next up is Wildspeaker a band that plays a mixture of black metal, sludge and crust punk.
Their side of the split starts out with a very fast and raw black metal sound which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats along with some high pitched screams a few seconds later and you can also hear a lot of sludge and doom metal elements in the slower sections of the songs.
Throughout their side of the recording there is a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and after awhile some of the riffing starts incorporating more melody and some of the faster riffing brings in a touch of crust punk and all of the musical instruments on there side of the recording sound very powerful and all of their songs stick to a heavy musical direction and the last track brings in a little bit of melodic guitar leads.
Wildspeaker plays a musical style that takes a very raw form of black metal and mixes it with crust, sludge and doom metal to create a sound of their own, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover the resilience of nature and the downfalls of human civilization.
In my opinion Wildspeaker are a very great sounding mixture of black metal, sludge, doom and crust and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Sins Of Desperation" and "First Taste Of Flesh".
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and would recommend it to all fans of post and crust influenced black metal. 8 out of 10.
