Vrtra are a band from San Francisco, California that plays a mixture of black, doom, death and post metal and this is a review of their 2016 ep "My Bones Hold A Stillness" which was released by Sentient Ruin Laboratories.
Clean guitar playing starts off the ep and after a few seconds the music goes into a heavier direction while also adding melody and spoken word parts on the recording as well as some black metal screams and melodic vocals along with elements of post metal can be heard in certain sections of the recording.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic fashion and the slow riffs are heavily influenced by doom metal and death metal growls can also be heard at times and when the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw black metal feeling and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and elements of drone and experimental music can be heard at times and all of the tracks are very long and epic in length and you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording.
Vrtra plays a musical style that takes a very dark and modern form of black metal and mixes it with doom, death and post metal to create something very different, the production sounds very dark yet heavy and powerful at the same time while the lyrics cover dark themes.
In my opinion Vrtra are a very great sounding mixture of black, doom, death and post metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Perpetually Hag Ridden". 8 out of 10.
