Kold Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Kold is a two man black metal band. The project leans on the traditional formulas from the second wave of black metal but utilizes a unique blend of melodicity and rhythmic variation in combination with the classic elements from the 90s.

We created the band in the spring of 2020 and the EP was written and recorded in two different parts of Denmark. With an alternating focus on recording and production, the record was completed during February 2021. All this means that the EP was created during a melancholic time, where loneliness and longing became the main source of inspiration.

2.Recently you have released an EP, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

We wanted to create black metal where we could channel some of our thoughts and feelings in a way that no other genre of music can do. So with black metal as the starting point, we then channeled our inner lives. It was important to us that the songs didn’t get refined and adjusted too much. Because it’s not about achieving musical perfection. It’s about sincerity and sentiment.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

The lyrics are based on some of the thoughts, emotions and experiences we or the people around us in our lives have had while we were making the EP. The stories range from an abstract story of a peasant family's hopeless childlessness, the shameful nature of isolation, to the gloomy backside of escapism and the most sinful nooks and crannies of the human chamber of thought.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Kold'?

Kold is cold in Danish. We wanted the name to reflect the general sentiment of the project where we channel the coldness of our inner lives.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

The picture is taken locally from near where M grew up. We wanted the artwork to elicit the same emotions as the music and lyrics. Coldness, beauty and sincerity.

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

We are open to including more people if the fit is right. But it’s important that we all share the same passion and intentions.

7.The EP was released by Vendetta Records, how did you get in contact with this label?

We knew that a lot of Danish black metal bands were working with Vendetta Records, and we know someone personally who has released with them, so once the EP was almost finished we followed the label on instagram in the hopes of sparking an interest from them. They then contacted us, asking if we would show them some of our music. And luckily, they liked it. It probably also helped to establish a collaboration that everything was more or less ready to go.

8.On a worldwide level, how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

The reception has been beyond any of our expectations. The reactions have been very positive. The cassette tapes sold out within a day, so we decided to do a second press. We didn’t really anticipate anyone to take notice of the release, but it has gotten quite a bit more attention than we expected both from listeners, reviewers and the industry.

9.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

It’s difficult to say how long it will take, but new material is already being made.

The genre will still be black metal, but as the music is made from the thoughts and emotions that are in our lives when we write it, it will sound like whatever that is. Hard to say what that means musically.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I(N) listen to a lot of different genres, but of the bands that inspire me for Kold right now I can mention for example Deafheaven and Afsky.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

I’ve(N) recently gotten into botany. So I’m growing a lot of plants, mainly chili peppers.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

The release of our self-titled debut EP is only the beginning of a hopefully long and exciting journey for Kold. So stay tuned!
