Alioth Borealis are a solo project from Cleveland, Ohio that plays an ambient form of black metal and this is a review of his 2024 album "Beyond The Stars/Below The Waves" which will be released on August 30th, 2024.
Horror movie style synths start off the album which also bring in elements of ambient while also mixing in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with the vocals being mostly high pitched black metal screams.
Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing while the album also has its atmospheric moments. When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can also be heard which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling, one of the tracks also adds in session work from the main guy behind Veska.
Some of the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as keeping the main focus on a slower direction, shamanistic style percussion can also be heard briefly and there are also a couple of instrumentals. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover cosmic horror themes inspired by the writings of H.P Lovecraft and Thomas Ligotti.
In my opinion Alioth Borealis are a very great sounding ambient black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACSK INCLUDE "The Mausoleum Of All Hope And Desire" "Dagon" and "Aguirre ( River Below, Stars Above)". 8 out of 10.
