Sur Astra are a band from Romania that plays a very atmospheric, progressive and folk influenced form of black metal and this is a review of their 2024 album "Datura Strahiarefor" which will be released on August 30th by Avantgarde Music.
Nature sounds start off the album along with some spoken word parts, folk instruments and orchestration a few seconds later which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing and the harsh vocals add in a mixture of growls and black metal screams.
A great portion of the songs are also very long and epic in length while the music also has its atmospheric moments. Clear vocals are also utilized at times along with all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them as well as the album also having its progressive moments.
When the music speeds up on a couple of tracks a small amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can also be heard along with the songs also sticking to more of a slow or mid tempo direction as well as the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style when they are utilized. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Romanian and is a concept album covering the apocalypse triggered by magical beings from the mythology of the band members homeland.
In my opinion Sur Astra are a very great sounding atmospheric, progressive and folk influenced black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Stransura" "Cele Bune" and "Ispravirea". 8 out of 10.
