Vafurlogi are a band from Iceland that plays an old school form of black metal and this is a review of their 2024 album "Í vökulli áþján" which will be released in September as a joint effort between NoEvDica and Oration.
Classical guitars start off the album before going into more of a heavier and melodic direction while some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length. Vocals are a mostly growls mixed in with some black metal screams and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard.
When tremolo picking is added into the fast riffing they also give the songs more of a raw feeling while the music is very heavily rooted in the mid 90's to early 2000's era mixed in with some modern touches. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them.
The tracks also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and when guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along one song also adding in a brief use of clear vocals, synths can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Icelandic and cover darkness and apocalyptic themes.
In my opinion Vafurlogi are a very great sounding old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Reikul Vofa" "Dreyrrauði" and "Duftið Eitt". 8 out of 10.
