Unwelcome Soul are a solo project from Tennessee that plays a very experimental form of black metal with elements of thrash and doom metal and this is a review of his self released 2024 album "Dried Petals".
Synths start off the album along with some whispers a few seconds later before going into a heavier musical direction. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a r aw feeling and melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them along with the album also having its experimental moments, spoken word parts can also be heard briefly.
Elements of doom metal are also added into the slower sections of the songs along with some of the riffing also showing an influence of thrash metal, clean playing can also be heard on a few tracks and melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffs. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover a feeling of being disconnected from modern society.
In my opinion Unwelcome Soul are a very great sounding experimental black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Time, Don't Save" and "Shells". 8 out of 10.
