  Ugly  are  a  solo  project  from  West  Virginia  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric,  depressive,  lo-fi  and  raw  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2022  demo  "Too  Weak  To  Carry  On".

  Dark  yet  melodic  riffing  starts  off  the  demo  while  the  music  also  captures  a  very  lo-fi  atmosphere.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  yet  depressive  sounding  black  metal  screams.  All  of  the  songs  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  and  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats,  fast  playing  and  raw  tremolo  picking  is  added  on  the  closing  song  

  Ugly  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  atmospheric,  depressive,  raw  and  lo-fi  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  depression,  melancholy  and  suicide  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Ugly  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric,  depressive,  lo-fi  and  raw  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Bloody  Melancholy(Life  is  Pain)".  8  out  of  10.

Stuck In A Hard Place/No Light Ahead But Death/2022 Compilation Album Review

 

  Stuck  In  A  Hard  Place  are  a  solo  project  from  West  Virginia  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric,  depressive,  lo-fi  and  raw  form  of  black  metal  with  elements  of  dark  ambient  and  noise  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2022  compilation  album  "No  Light  Ahead  But  Death".

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  compilation  before  going  into  a  very  fast,  raw  and  lo-fi  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  yet  depressive  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.  Throughout  the  compilation  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  noises  also  being  added  into  the  background  at  times  as  well  as  some  elements  of  dark  ambient  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  album  closes  with  a  cover  of  Xasthur's  "A  Walk  Beyond  Utter  Blackness".

Unendliches Eisland/II/2022 Full Length Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  West  Virginia's  Unendliches  Eisland  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  blackened  and  depressive  mixture  of  dark  ambient  and  noise  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2022  album  "II".

  Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  synths  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  bring  in  elements  of  dark  ambient,  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  music  also  captures  the  atmosphere  of  a  depressive  black  metal  album  and  all  of  the  music  sticks  to  an  instrumental  direction.

  Dark  soundscapes  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  noises  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks.  Each  song  also  sounds  very  different  from  each  other  and  at  times  the  music  also  captures  a minimalist  approach.

  On  this  recording  Unendliches  Eisland  takes  the  atmosphere  of  depressive  black  metal, takes  away  the  guitars  and  vocals  and  bring  in  elements  of  dark  ambient  and  noise  to  create  something  very  different  from  his  previous  release  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Unendliches  Eisland  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal,  dark  ambient  and  noise,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Beyond  The  Wonders  Of  Night"  and  "An  Internal  War  Rages".  8  out  of  10.

  A  very  dark  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  synths  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  brings  in  elements  of  ambient  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  lo-fi  musical  direction.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  along  with  some  dark  soundscapes  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording,  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals.

  Unendliches  Eisland  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  atmospheric,  depressive,  lo-fi  and  raw  sounding  as  well  as  mixing  in  elements  of  dark  ambient  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  winter  themes.

Mithrandr/Towards The Spires of Dol Guldur/2023 Full Length Review

 

    Mithrandir  are  a  duo  from  Finland  that  plays  a  medieval  fantasy  themed  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  album  "Towards  The  Spires  of  Dol  Guldur".

  Epic  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  while  also  bringing  in  a  medieval  atmosphere  and  elements  of  dungeon  synth  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast b eats  can b e  heard.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  faster  riffing  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  Melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  old  school  influences.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized  as  well  as  one  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  songs.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  medieval  fantasy  and  the  writings  of  J.R.R  Tolkien.

  In  my  opinion  Nothrandir  are  a  very  great  sounding  medieval  fantasy  themed  black  metal  duo  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ikliuni"  "Crebain"  and  "Guardians  of  Fangorn".  8  out  of  10.

Despair Eternal/Self Titled/Syrop Moose Records/2023 EP Review

 

  Despair  Eternal  are  a  solo  project  from  Germany  that  plays  a  feminist  and  anti  fascist  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  her  self  titled  2023  ep  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Syrup  Moose  Records.

  Melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  nature  sounds  before  adding  in  some  heavy  riffing  that  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  melody.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  All  of t he  musical  instruments  on t he  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Synths  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  a  couple  of  the  songs  also  being instrumentals  and  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  as  well  as  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  whispers  and  clear  singing  can  also b e  heard  towards  the  end.

  Despair  Eternal  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw,  aggressive  and  antifascist  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  anti  fascism  and  feminism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Despair  Eternal  are  a  very  great  sounding  anti  fascist  feminist  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Despair  Eternal"  and  "Bella  Ciao".  8 out  of  10.

Blood Stained Dusk/Dead Lights Beckon Me/Black Lion Records/2023 EP Review

 

  Blood  Stained  Dusk  are  a  band  from  Alabama  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  old  school,  atmospheric,  occult  and  satanic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  ep  "Dead  Lights  Beckon  Me"  which  was  released  by  Black  Lion  Records.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  playing  and  keyboards  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  At  times  the  music  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  while  also  adding  in  some  symphonic  touches  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  and  early  2000's  era  of  the  genre  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  the  vocals  are  adding  in  some  more  deep  and  aggressive  touches  at  times,  operatic  singing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  ep  closes  with  an  orchestral  orientated  instrumental. The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  occultism,  Evil  and  Darkness  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Blood  Stained  Dusk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  symphonic,  old  school,  occult  and  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Dead  Lights  Beckon  Me"  and  "Worship  And  Disintegrate".  8/5  out  of  10.
