This is a review of a split album between Netherlands's Meslamtaea and The Color of Rain called "Nihil Vincit Omnia" which will b e released on June 28th by Zwawrtgevegt and we will start off the review with Meslamtaea a band that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a very atmospheric and progressive form of black metal.
Their side of the split starts out with some clean playing, keyboards and melodic guitar solos and leads while the music also gets very progressive sounding at times. Spoken word parts can also be heard briefly before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats.
Vocals are mostly high pitched depressive black metal screams along with some angry shouts, clear singing, growls and horn's also being utilized at times. The music also has its atmospheric, experimental and dissonant moments as well as the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody, all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them, the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Dutch and cover urban life, modernity and apocalyptic themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Meslamtaea and if you are a fan of atmospheric and progressive black metal, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Bsef Komy in Vlagen" and "Samen Zielsallen".
Next up is The Color of Rain a band that plays a very experimental and progressive form of post black metal.
Their side of the split starts out with some apocalyptic spoken word parts along with some synths and keyboards a few seconds later which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times while the clean sections also take the music into more of a progressive and experimental direction.
Melodies can also be heard at times along with the faster sections of the songs also adding in a decent amount of blast beats. Vocals also add in a mixture of black metal screams and growls as well as the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style, one song also adds in a brief use of clear singing. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover nihilism themes.
In my opinion The Color of Rain are a very great sounding experimental and progressive post black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "As The Empires Fell" and "Thus Always To Tyrants".
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and I would recommend it to all fans of experimental black metal. 8 out of 10.
