Licurgo are a band from Spain that plays a very raw form of black metal and this is a review of their 2014 album "Flames" which was released by Vacula Productions.
A very dark, atmospheric and ritualistic sound starts off the album and a few seconds alter clean playing and demonic chanting are added onto the recording along with some deep growls and grim black metal screams that start taking the music into more of a heavy and melodic musical direction and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.
When the music speeds up the music starts going for more of a raw and old school style of black metal along with a decent amount of blast beats and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the music is more rooted in the 90's second wave style while the production gives the music more of a modern feeling while a later track does add in a touch of the first wave sound and a later song also brings in a small amount of bass guitar leads.
Licurgo plays a style of black metal that is very fast, raw and old school sounding in the second wave tradition, the production sounds very raw yet heavy at the same time while the lyrics cover Satanism, Occultism, Darkness and Misanthropic themes.
In my opinion Licurgo are a very great sounding raw and old school style black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Pater Nostre Sataana" "Black Eternity" "Salve Satan!" and "Demonical Conquest". 8 out of 10.
