Nattfog are a solo project from Finland that plays a very raw, melodic and folklore orientated form of black metal and this is a review of their 2019 compilation album "Pohjan Porteilta" which will be released on May 31st by Purity Through Fire.
Epic sounding keyboards start off the compilation before going into a heavier musical direction. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while the riffs also bring in a great amount of melody along with the solos and leads being done in a very raw and melodic style.
All of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them while the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. A great portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length and when acoustic guitars are utilized they bring in elements of folk music.
Folk instruments and synths can also be heard in certain sections of the recording while the most of the music is very heavily rooted in the old school Finnish style and the compilation closes with an instrumental. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Finnish and cover cosmos, death, nature and despair themes.
In my opinion Nattfog are a very great sounding folklore orientated raw and melodic solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Night Of The Ancient Rites" "Yoni Usvassa" "Yon Varjoista...". 8 out of 10.
