Hellehond Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Bob- Hellehond formed in 2017 with the idea to play dark metal in the style of old Samael during their demo times. Burzum was an influence too.

2.You have an album coming out in December, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recording?
Bob- Stylewise we are influenced by very early Samael, old Burzum and Hellhammer. As for the albumrecording, all was played live in the studio without any overdubs or editing. Just 1 guitar, bass and drums and that was it. The vocals were done later in a different studio. Devo from Marduk did the mix very fast and it was good already the first time so we left it just that way. It sounds exactly like we wanted it to sound.

3. A lot of the band members also have experience playing in death metal band, what was the decision behind going into a more black metal influenced direction with this band?
Bob- as for me, I always was a Black Metal fan when I was a teenager in the early 80's when bands such as Venom, Hellhammer and Bathory started out. Those are my fave bands ever as well so it is good to play that kind of obscure metal ourselves which we also did in the early Asphyx days. The other members in Hellehond were part of Dutch Black Metal Wederganger and the guitarist was in Infidel Reich.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?
Bob- the lyrics are in Dutch and deal with typical Dutch saga's,Folklore and myths which our surroundings are full of with.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Hellehond'?
Bob- Hellehond was a Dog from Hell coming from this area centuries ago who came to eat a farmer's livestock and when that was not enough the farmers were cursed til eternity.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?
Bob- that is the Hellehond roaming the area leaving only death behind made by artist Rebecca Waek from Germany.
It is a real oilpainting especially made for us. She is a great artist and probably the best in the genre.

7.Some of the band members have a history that goes back as far as the early 90's, what is it that motivates you to continue playing extreme metal after 3 decades?
Bob- even mid 80's like myself when I found Asphyx in 1987...
I don't know but it is what I do and like doing most. It just pops into my mind to do something extreme and not following any trend or just go right against it.
It is who I am.

8.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?
Bob-not yet but we are open to the idea.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?
Bob- the album is not out yet but the people who have heard mostly it loved it and some thought it was too simple which was the idea anyway.
The people who liked it loved the songs and the fact the production is extremely raw and unpolished.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?
Bob- Stijn is also in Usurper(thrash from Holland) and Rectal Smegma(grind). The others only do Hellehond and as for myself I am also doing Infidel Reich, Beast Of Revelation and Siege of Power.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Bob- we will not change so it will be raw music with the 80's vibe to the end.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Bob- Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer/Frost, Necrophagia, Sodom, Necrovore, Incubus(Fl), Carnivore and Messiah.
These are the bands I still listen to nowadays and amongst them are also old Metallica, old Slayer, Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Type O Negative, Exciter, Black Sabbath, Trouble, Judas Priest, Infernäl Mäjesty, Mayhem and Winter.

13.Does Satanism or occultism play any role in the music?
Bob- occultism yes but Satanism not anymore since the early Asphyx days.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Bob- thanx for this interview
