Sotherion are a solo project from France that plays a very raw and old school form of black metal and this is a review of his 2024 album "Vermine" which was released by W.T.C Productions.
A synth orientated intro and choirs start off the album before going into a heavier direction while the vocals bring in more of a deep and angry black metal approach. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them and dark sounding melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. The riffs also mix the first and second wave era's of the genre with a more modern approach while the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very dark yet melodic style and one song also adds in a brief use of apocalyptic samples as well as some spoken word parts also being utilized briefly. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover a darkened view of reality, the ever-decaying modern world and the instinct to welcome death of all as the ultimate goal of the human experiment.
In my opinion Sotherion are a very great sounding raw and old school black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Fallen" "Famished King" and "Shrine Of The Chosen". 8 out of 10.
