Portugal's solo project Grievance has returned with a collection of material he has recorded in the last 3 decades which also shows the music going for a raw and old school style of black metal and this is a review of his 2024 compilation album "Antologia 19997-2024" which will be released on May 7th by Haloren Records.
A very dark yet heavy sound starts off the compilation while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams along with some angry shouts also being utilized at times. Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing as well as the songs also adding in a mixture of modern and old school touches.
When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Throughout the compilation you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic yet old school style.
Synths can also be heard on some of the tracks along with one song also adding in a brief use of spoken word parts. a couple of songs are instrumentals as well as one of them also adding in a brief use of folk instruments, some of the earlier recordings also capture a very lo-fi atmosphere and growls, clean playing and spoken word parts can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Portuguese and cover Occultism, Folklore, Philosophy and Struggle themes.
In my opinion this is a very great sounding collection from Grievance and if you are a fan of raw and old school black metal, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Rito De Passagem" "Lust For Battle" and "Eterna Noites de Inverno". 8 out of 10.
