Freyr are a solo project from Brazil that plays a very anti cosmic form of pagan black metal and this is a review of his self released 2025 album "The Death Embracing".
Keyboards start off the album before going into a heavier direction while the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams along with some growls also being utilized at times and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast b eats can also be heard.
When tremolo picking is added into the fast riffing they also give the album more of a raw feeling while the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts . Clean playing can also be heard briefly along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style.
Spoken word parts and folk instruments can also be heard briefly. as well as one song also adding in a small amount of female vocals along with the songs also adding in a good amount of 90's influences, one track is also a Diabolic Funeral cover. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics cover anti-cosmic gnosis inspired by various pagan cultures.
In my opinion Freyr are a very great sounding anti cosmic pagan black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Death Embracing" "The Land Of The Spirit" "In The Fallen Earth" and "Filhos de Noite". 8 out of 10.
