Wounded Funeral are a band from Quebec, Canada that plays a shamanistic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2024 album "Skaalp" which will be released on May 25th as a joint effort between Satanath, Australis and Futhark Records.
A very ritualistic sound starts off the album along with some clean playing and whispers while tribal style instruments can also be heard briefly before going into a heavier direction. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them and the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody.
When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams along with the tracks also adding in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as the riffs also bringing in a lot of melody.
Synths can also be heard on a couple of songs as well a s giving the music more of an atmospheric touch and when guitar solos and leads are introduced onto the album they are also done in a very melodic style, shamanistic soundscapes, clean chants and percussion can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark legends of the first nations.
In my opinion Wounded Funeral are a very great sounding shamanistic black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Frozen Sun Ceremony" and "The Wrecking Of The Crypts'. 8 out of 10.
