  Avowd  are  a  duo  from  Chicago,  Illinois  that  plays  a  very  chaotic  and  dissonant  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  ep  "Avowd  Vol.  1".

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  riffing  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  dissonant  structures  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  the  guitar  leads  also being  done  in  a  very  chaotic  style  when  they  are  utilized ,  spoken  word  parts  and  death  metal g rowls  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  Avowd  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  dissonant  and  chaotic  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  blasphemy  and  occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Avowd  are  a  very  great  sounding  chaotic  and  dissonant  black  metal  duo  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Beware  of  A  Holy  Whore"  and  "Voice  of  the  Ancients".  8 out  of  10.

Irreparable/Complete Emptiness/2023 EP Review

 

  Irreparable  are  a  band  from  Australia  that  plays  a  mixture  of  depressive  black  metal,  industrial,  goth  and  darkwave  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  ep  "Complete  Emptiness".

  An  industrial  style  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  all  of  the  drum  beats  and  electronics  are  also  programmed.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  clear  singing  being  done  in  more  of  a  goth  rock  and  darkwave  style  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  High  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  female  vocals.  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  spoken  word  parts  are  also  added  towards  the  end.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  loss,  suffering  and  emptiness.

  In  my  opinion  Irreparable  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  depressive  black  metal,  industrial,  goth  and  darkwave  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Retribution  I:  Through  The  Abyss"  and  "Fractured  Essence".  8  OUT  OF  10.

Sacrenoir/Commie des Revenants Parmi less Ruines/Sepulchral Productions/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Sacrenoir  are  a  duo  from  Montreal,  Quebec,  Canada  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  old  school  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Commie  des  Revenants  Parmi  less Ruines"  which  will  be  released on June  24th  by  Sepulchral  Productions.

  Thunder  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  going  into a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Melodies  are  also added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  sounding  black  metal  screams.

  Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style,  one  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  clean  playing  and  the  closing  song  is  also  a  synth  orientated  instrumental.

  Sacrenoir  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  old  school  in  the  90's  tradition.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  Satanism,  Vampirism  and  Darkness  themes.    

  In  my  opinion  Sacrenoir  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS INCLUDE  "Mille  nuits  ont  passé"  "The  Blade  Of  Satan"  and  "Vers  d'autres  mondes".  8  out  of  10.

  Mrakomor  are  a  solo  project  from  Czechia  that  plays  a  very  slow  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2023  ep  "V  Dekádách  Dekadence(In  Decades  Of Decadence)".

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  all  of  t5he  riffing  is  done  on  power  chords  and  the  whole  ep  also  sticks  to  a  slower  direction.

  Mrakomor  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  slow,  melancholic  and  depressive  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  depression,  melancholy  and  strong  emotion  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Mrakomor  are  a  very  great  sounding  slow  and  depressive  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Plague  Beauties".  8  out  of 10.

  Elderwind  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  ambient  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  album  "Fires".

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clear  vocals  and  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard.

  Elderwind  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  epic  and  atmospheric  sounding  as  well a s  adding  in  elements  of  dark  ambient  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  tragic  loss  and  impending  doom.

  In  my  opinion  Elderwind  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  ambient  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Last  Days"  and  "Rebirth".  8 out  of  10.

  Apocalyptic  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  riffs  also  add  in a   good  amount  of  dissonant  structures.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the   faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  raw  black  metal  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.

  Vocals  are  done  in  mostly  growling  style  while  shouts  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  small  amounts  of  melody.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Synths  also  return  on  later  tracks  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  vocals  also  mixing  in  more  of  an  angry  black  metal  approach  at  times  and  the  music  also  has  its  psychedelic  moments.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  ylrics  cover  apocalyptic  themes..

Trepas/Les Ombres Malades/Sepulchral Productions/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Trepas  are  a  band  from  Quebec,  Canada  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  melancholic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Les  Ombres  Malades"  which  will  be  released  on  June  24th  by  Sepulchral  Productions.

  Tortured  voices  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  faster  riffing  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffs.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  some  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars,  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  On  this  recording  Trepas  remain  true  to  the  atmospheric  and  melancholic  style  of  black  metal  tat  they  had  established  on  their  previous  release.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  darkness,  alienation  and  melancholy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Trepas  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  melancholic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Aliénation"  "Métamorphose"  and  "L'astre  noir".  8 o8ut  of  10.
