Cantique Lepraux are a band from Quebec, Canada that plays a very raw and atmospheric form of occult black metal and this is a review of their 2016 album "Cedres Celestes" which will be released by Eisenwald in March.
A very dark, distorted and droning sound starts off the album and after a few minutes the album goes into its first track bringing in a very raw black metal sound that also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats as well as some grim screams making there presence known on the recording a few seconds later.
Most of the fast parts are rooted in the 90's second wave style of black metal and when the music slows down it brings in melodic guitar leads that are more related to the modern style of atmospheric black metal and you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording.
Some of the screams have a depressive tone to them and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and they also bring in a track that is very and fast while also adding more atmosphere to the recording and one song brings in a brief use of acoustic guitars before making a return back to a more heavier and raw style of black metal and they also bring back the acoustic guitars for the closing of the album.
Cantique Lepraux plays a style of black metal that can be very raw at times while also being atmospheric at the same time in more of a guitar driven style, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in French and cover the occult, death and fear.
In my opinion Cantique Lepraux are a very great sounding raw and atmospheric occult black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Le froid lepreux" "Tourments des limbes glacials" and "Le mangeur d' oss". 8 out of 10.
