K.F.R are a solo project from France that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording goes for a very raw, lo-fi, experimental and ambient form of black metal and this is a review of his 2023 album "Pain/Ter" which will be released in April by Time To kill Records.
Dark soundscapes and demonic voices start off the album before going into a heavier direction while the synths also bring in elements of ambient. The music also captures a very lo-fi atmosphere while the vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams and when the music speeds up a lot of blast beats can be heard.
When tremolo picking is added into the faster riffing they also give the songs more of a raw feeling while a great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length. Throughout the recording you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the album also has its experimental moments.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very distorted yet chaotic style along with some of the riffing also adding in a small amount of melody, spoken words can also be heard on a couple of tracks and one song also adds in some session work from Kvarforth from Shining. The production sounds very dark, raw and lo-fi while the lyrics cover Total Art in the sense of Wagner and his relation to pain and the Devil.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from K.F.R and if you are a fan of raw, lo-fi, experimental and ambient black metal, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Retrograde" and "The Serpent's Kiss". 8 out of 10.
