Mortui Vultus are a band from Ukraine that plays a very depressive form of post black metal and this is a review of their self released 2025 album "Distant Echoes".
Spoken words start off the album along with some clean playing which also returns on later tracks a few seconds later before going into a heavier direction. Vocals are mostly high pitched depressive black metal screams while the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody and the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic post metal style.
A great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. Elements of shoegaze,, screamo and post rock can also be heard at times, when the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling as well as one song also adding in a brief use of clear vocals.
Mortui Vultus plays a style of post black metal that is very depressive sounding as well as mixing in touches of shoegaze and screamo to create a sound of their own. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover the realities of life during and after the Ukrainian War.
In my opinion Mortui Vultus are a very great sounding depressive post black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Mara" and "Broken Bad". 8 out of 10.
