Want Of Sin are a band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin that plays an atmospheric form of post black metal and this is a review of their self released 2025 album "Hydrophobic" which will be released on February 7th.
Rain and thunder sounds start off the album along with some keyboards a few seconds alter which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in more of a melodic post metal style and the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. When spoken words are utilized they also add in more of a melancholic touch along with the clean sections also adding in elements of shoegaze when they are utilized.
Clear vocals are also added into certain sections of the album along with the recording also having its atmospheric moments. When the music speeds up a small amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover existential dread, the corruption of faith, and the suffocating weight of water as a metaphor for inescapable sin.
In my opinion Want Of Sin are a very great sounding atmospheric post black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Baptism" and "Extinguished". 8 out of 10.
