Necromass are a band from Italy that has a history that goes back 20 years with a musical style that I would describe as being atmospheric old school, occult black metal with elements of death and doom and this is a review of their 2013 comeback album "Calix. Utero. Babalon" which was released by Funeral Industries.
Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with some blast beats being utilized at times, while the keyboards which are only used briefly bring a very dark, atmospheric, evil and occult sound to the album as well as a brief use of violins, as for the bass playing it has a very strong and powerful sound with heavy riffing that dominates throughout the recording.
Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast old school style occult black metal riffs that also utilize a great amount of melody, doom and death metal influences to create a sound of their own along with some progressive elements, while the lead guitars are very 90's sounding melodic black/death metal guitar solos and leads, as for the acoustic guitars which are only utilized briefly use finger picking to enhance the dark atmosphere of the album .
Vocals range from grim sounding and high pitched black metal screams to deep death metal growls as well as some spoken word ritualistic parts, while the lyrics cover Occultism, Crowley and Luciferian themes, as for the production it has a very dark and heavy old school sound where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording with some of the songs being long and epic in length.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Necromass and if you are a fan of early 90's style occult black metal, you should check out this comeback album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Chapel Of Abominations" "The Bornless One" and "Av Luciferis Vim". RECOMMENDED BUY.
