Pillorian are a band from Portland, Oregon with members from Agalloch, UADA and Maetus that plays a mixture of dark and black metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Obsidian Arc" which will be released in March by Eisenwald.
Acoustic guitars start off the album and also mix in with the heavier and more melodic sections of the music a few seconds later and after awhile grim black metal screams make their presence known and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard and the guitar leads also use a great amount of melody.
All of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them and the acoustic guitars also add in touches of neo folk and a great portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length and the tremolo picking in the faster sections of the songs give the music more of a raw black metal feeling.
The slower sections of the tracks are heavily influenced by doom metal and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts whispers can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and as the album progresses the vocals start adding in a more depressive tone and also add a small amount of clean singing on some of the later tracks and the music also brings in a more modern atmospheric style and some songs also have an avant garde touch to them and there is also a brief instrumental before closing the album with a vocal track.
Pillorian plays a style of dark/black metal that is very atmospheric, modern and melodic while also adding in some progressive and neo folk elements which makes the music stand out a lot more, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark and depressive themes.
In my opinion Pillorian are a very great sounding mixture of dark and black metal and if you are a fan of those musical genre, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Archaen Divinity" "A Stygian Pyre" and "Dark Is The River Of Man". 8 out of 10.
