The Proprietor are a duo from New York that plays a very raw, and melodic form of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2018 album "For Nothing Is My Own".
Dark sounding keyboards start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams as well as the riffs also bringing in a great amount of melody.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the solos and leads are done in a very melodic fashion along with the music being very heavily rooted in the mid 90's and clean playing as well as some stringed instruments can also be heard briefly before returning back to a heavier direction and there are also a couple of ambient orientated instrumentals as the album progresses and at times the music gets very modern and atmospheric and one track also brings in a brief use of ritualistic spoken word samples.
The Proprietor plays a style of black metal that is very raw, melodic and atmospheric as well as being influenced by both the old school and modern styles, the production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover poetry, prose, the writings of Shakespeare and Occultism themes.
In my opinion The Proprietor are a very great sounding raw, atmospheric and melodic black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "For Nothing Is My Own" "I Ran The Dark Ages" "Book Of Thoth" and "Letters From Earth". 8 out of 10.
