Spell Of Dark is a solo project from Russia that plays a very atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of his 2019 album "The Vastness" which was released by Wolfspell Records.
A very dark sound starts off the album while all of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them. Most of the tracks a re very long and epic in length along with the vocals being mostly grim black metal screams and the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody.
Atmospheric sounding synths are also added into some parts of the recording along with the solos and leads being done in a very melodic style. Spoken word parts can also be heard in certain sections of the recording while one track also introduces whispered vocals into the music.
All of the tracks sticking to a slower direction and as the album progresses a brief use of clean playing and melodic vocals can also be heard and the recording also closes with a cover of Wojnar's "Smutek Nocy" which also introduces elements of dungeon synth into the music as well as being an instrumental. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover winter and sorrow themes.
In my opinion Spell of Dark are a very great sounding atmospheric black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Faraway Lands" and "The Vastness". 8 out of 10.
