Totenheer are a band from Switzerland that plays a very powerful and energetic form of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2020 album "Die Schwarze Spinne" which will be released on January 24th.
Dulcimer's starts off the album along with some heavy yet melodic riffing a few seconds later. During the faster sections a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the music more of a raw feeling as well as the vocals being mostly angry sounding black metal screams.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's era. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic yet old school style as well as the riffing also having some 80's influences on one of the tracks.
A couple of the songs are also very long and epic in length and as the album progresses a brief use of clean playing can also be heard along with all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them, spoken word parts can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in German and is a concept album based upon "the Black Spider" a novella written in 1842 by Jeremias Gotthelf.
In my opinion Totenheer are a very great sounding powerful and energetic black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Der Komthur" "Feuerschweif" "Die Schwarze Spinne" and "Martyrium". 8 out of 10.
