Zalmoxis are a solo project from Germany that plays a very storming and epic form of black metal and this is a review of his 2020 ep "A Nocturnal Emanation" which will be released on January 31st by Signal Rex.
Clean playing starts off the ep before going into a heavier direction while the only track that is presented on this recording is over 25 minutes in length. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them as well as a brief use of some melodic yet ritualistic chanting vocals.
The riffs also add in a decent amount of melody along with the music also having its dissonant moments. When guitar leads are utilized they are also done in a very distorted yet melodic style while the music also adds in a great amount of black emtal screams and during the faster sections of the song blast beats can be heard.
When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the music more of a raw feeling as well as the song also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, clean singing can also be heard in some parts of the track and as the ep progresses a brief use of atmospheric sounding synths can also be heard in the background and clean playing also makes a brief return. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover darkness and occult themes.
In my opinion Zalmoxis are a very great sounding storming and epic black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. 8 out of 10.
