Todesfall Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

- Deimos : I had a lot of ideas and music which I wanted to make into something coherent, so when I met D.(Joys of Life), who shared similar ideological and musical views, we joined forces and around 2019 created Todesfall.

- D. : Somewhere back in 2017 I met Deimos in person, we had a rather short conversation about our musical workings and caught up later many times, discussing and sharing ideas about art and other philosophical topics. After a while I brought up the thought of working together, since I already had a set up studio in Temerin where I was recording by myself, as he had musical ideas of his own, sharing many points with my past workings. Once the details were discussed, the musical project was formed. He delivered on the songwriting side, while I worked on the rhythm section and wrote and recorded the vocals. Now the debut ist released, and we intend on continuing in this way in the future, building upon what we have learned and experienced thus far.

2.In February you also released an album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

- Deimos : The musical style you could say is more or less a primitive version of bands like Dissection, etc. We stayed away from the raw necro sound, and took a quasi modern approach to the music and production, which also serves very well as a musical foundation on which we can build upon with next releases.

- D. : In our minds, once the songs came together one by one, we have agreed without words that the sound is going to go in a more melodic and dynamic direction, pulling each others visions and thoughts higher as all became now the finished work. From my standpoint, I wanted to take a step forward regarding the production, being cleaner and less lo-fi than my earlier work. Perhaps the biggest change for me,was my decision to write the lyrics in english instead of german as in all my earlier musical work.

3.Your main lyrical topics are Chaosophy, Death Worship., Alchemy and Gnosticism, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the esoteric arts?

- Deimos : It is less of an interest, and more of a way of living.

- D. : As if it was always there as a seed longing to blossom or a tumor becoming malignant. As many times, it was in the end always solitary, guided by intuition and the bottomless inspiration of the Current. The One, whose embrace we are growing to welcome in ever openness.

4.When i read the lyrics I could see that you have studied both Eastern and Western Occultism, how would you compare these two different cultures?

- D. : I believe that eclecticism is very important in our Work, for He who goes by many names, yet cannot be described by any, is experienced in infinite ways, shaded by the limited minds of the individuals or groups through and to which is spoken. As every occultists encounters differ, so are no paths to be followed blindly, for the true occultist learns from their wisdom and practice and incorporates it in his own Work. Of course there are the differences in translations and applications of insights, because of the above mentioned points, yet when distilled and channeled properly, they guide to the same one essence.

5.You also have some gnostic and qabalistic orientated topics, do you go for more of the darker side of these paths instead of the more right hand path that some of these tend to follow at times?

- Deimos : Of course, for where there is thesis, there also must be an antithesis. Even in those paths that are leaning more to the RHP, you can still find the "other", the antinomy, and exactly from that shadow that infests, we draw inspiration.

- D. : As mentioned in an earlier answer, one has to open himself fully to the limitlessness, undergoing the necessary changes in oneself to rise as one with it. Without delving too deep into details, these limits, often manifesting in personal and transpersonal realms are indeed to be broken in accordance with the Will of the practitioner for its own furthering, being therefore committed without borders and restrictions until all is nothing and nothing is all. Therefore, the former would better describe our approach.

6.What is it that you feel separates you from other occult black metal bands?

- Deimos : Our belief is everything to us, therefore, music (art) as a tool for expressing our ideas has great importance. Our devotion surpasses everyday banalities and our faith is true.

- D. : Todesfall is our shared vision which breathes our impressions and experiences into a musical body. Every pair of eyes sees differently. If a listener is able to connect with these vibrations and become open to them, this vision has succeeded.

7.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Todesfall'?

- D. : We were contemplating some time on the name. One day Deimos mentioned Todesfall in a conversation, which stuck for the both of us out of many reasons. Being a compound word in german which is to be translated primarily as death, as in ,,case of death”, but also more freely as ,, the Fall of death”, it has been decided to continue under this name.

8.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album cover?

- Deimos : The idea for the artwork came spontaneously, and was done by hand by me and my girlfriend, it represents an illustrative culmination of all the 9 songs, and the goal we try to achieve with this album.

9.In the promo pics you are also wearing some masks, do these have more of a ritualistic meaning to them?

- Deimos : For us it does. Masks have been part of ritualistic traditions for a long time, and for a good reason.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

- Deimos : I guess it's positive,we didn't really get that much "worldwide" feedback for our music.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on 'Todesfall"?

- Deimos : As mentioned above, bands like Dissection and Watain were a major influence. The Polish, Swedish, Icelandic scenes played also a big role in shaping my musical vision. That said, all the black metal I consume and enjoy has been a great influence on me.

- D. : While the writing process still was in work, I listened mostly to contemporary, rather dissonant black metal acts, so I would say that perhaps those had the biggest influence on me, although musically different. I would also have to mention the various dungeon synth projects I listen to.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

- Deimos : Thank you OccultBlackMetal zine.
