Lykhaeon are a band from Switzerland that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays a mixture of black and death metal and this is a review of their 2021 album "Opprobrium" which will be released in June by Repose Records.
Dark soundscapes and synths start off the album before going into a heavier musical direction while elements of doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the songs. Whispers can also be heard briefly along with the vocals also being a mixture of high pitched black metal screams and bestial death metal growls.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. The songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some dark sounding melodies also being added into the guitar riffing.
A great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with the music also having its atmospheric moments as well as the riffs also getting very dissonant sounding at times, folk instruments can also be heard briefly and when guitar solos and leads are finally utilized they are done in a very dark and melodic style. Shouts can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and as the album progresses a small amount of clean vocals and acoustic guitars are also brought into the music. The production sounds very dark and heavy while the lyrics cover a classic tale from Greek Mythology.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Lykhaeon and if you are a fan of black and death metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "A Stain Upon Celestial Rule" and "The Whorish Arrogance Of Immortals". 8 out of 10.
