Defod are a solo project from Wales that plays an atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of his 2021 ep "Cernig Hynafol" which was released by F.H.E.D.
A very heavy and melodic sound starts off the ep while the faster sections of the songs also add in a decent amount of blast beats. All of the musical instruments on the recording also h ave a very powerful sound to them along with the tremolo picking also giving the music more of a raw feeling when it is utilized.
Vocals are mostly angry sounding black metal screams while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. A couple of the tracks are also long and epic in length along with the music also having its atmospheric moments along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style.
Some of the riffing and vocals also shows an influence of death metal along with a couple of the tracks also being instrumentals and a couple of songs also introduces acoustic guitars and clean playing onto the recording. The production sounds very dark and heavy while the lyrics cover the landscapes and ancient monuments of North Wales.
In my opinion Defod are a very great sounding atmospheric black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Olwyn" and "Llwbyr Hynafol". 8 out of 10.
