Mortal Vail are a solo project from Illinois that plays a very raw and symphonic form of black metal and this is a review of his self released and self titled 20220 album.
A few seconds of silence start off the album before adding in a brief use of field recording before introducing keyboards onto the recording which also takes the music into a heavier direction. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very dark style and some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
Spoken word parts can also be heard on a few tracks while symphonic elements are also mixed in with the heavier sections of the songs. At times the music also captures a very lo-fi atmosphere along with the vocals being mostly high pitched black metal screams and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can also be heard.
When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the songs more of a raw feeling along with all of the musical instruments on the recording also having a very powerful sound to them. The songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as all of the tracks also sounding very different from each other, stringed instruments can also be heard briefly and melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing and as the album progresses a brief use of acoustic guitars and clean playing can also be heard. The production sounds very dark and raw while t he lyrics cover Satanism, Occultism and Darkness themes.
In my opinion Mortal Veil are a very great sounding raw and symphonic black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Malice In Saffron (A Take Of Revenge)" "Shattered Existence" "Inferno" and "Diorama Of Decay". 8 out of 10.
If you thought that the 2020 released album was good, wait until you get your hands on the newest album!!! 10/10, and the music videos are way epic too!!
