This is a review of an earlier recording from United Kingdom's Thus Defiled which showed the music going for an atmospheric mixture of black and death metal and the album was originally released in 1995 and called "Through The Impure Veil Of Dawn" and will be re-issued on November 28th, 2025 by Vic Records.
Dark sounding keyboards start off the album while also mixing in with the heavier sections of the songs at times and giving the recording more of an atmospheric feeling. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats can be heard which also gives the tracks more of a raw feeling.
Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing while the vocals also bring in a mixture of high pitched black metal screams and death metal growls. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them along with the songs also adding in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
One song is also an instrumental along with a couple of tracks also adding in a small amount of clean playing. Spoken words can also be heard on a few songs as well as the guitar leads also being done in a melodic style when they are finally utilized, the bonus tracks are also from 1994 rehearsal tapes which also shows more of a rawer style then the album. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics cover Satanism, Occultism, Darkness and Evil themes.
In my opinion this was a very great sounding recording from Thus Defiled and if you are a fan of old school, satanic black and death metal, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Wings Of Fallen Majesty" "Through The Impure Veil Of Dawn" "Fear us For We Are The Darkness" and "Under Blackening Horizons". 8/5 out of 10.
