VIII are a band from Italy that has been featured before in this zine and plays an occult form of avant garde black metal on this recoridng and this is a review of their 2016 album "Decathexis" which will be released in June by Third I Rex.
Avant garde sounds start off the album along with some harsh noises before going into more of a heavy and technical direction which also introduces grim black metal screams and blast beats onto the recording while the tremolo picking gives the songs more of a raw feeling and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.
Throughout the album you can hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while spoken word parts can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and all 3 of the tracks are very long and epic in length while saxophones when they are utilized enhance the avant garde and experimental nature of the bands musical style and you can also hear a great amount of doom metal elements in the slower riffing and keyboards can also be heard in the music at times and classical guitars along with traces of psychedelia are added onto the last track.
VIII changes their musical style on this recording and goes into more of an avant garde black metal direction, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover occultism, misanthropic, philosophical and individualism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from VIII and if you are a fan of avant garde black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Diagnosis". 8 out of 10.
