Mosaic are a band from Germany that plays an experimental form of black metal and this is a review of their 2014 ep "Old Man's Wynter" which was re-issued in 2016 with some bonus tracks that also turns the newer version into a full length.
Nature sounds and bells start off the album along with some ambient style synths a few seconds later and spoken word parts can also be heard at times and after the intro the music goes into more of a heavier and melodic musical direction along with some angry black metal screams and the solos and leads also use a great amount of melody.
Spoken word parts and atmospheric sounds can be heard at times and clean playing can also be heard in certain sections of the recording along with the music being very experimental and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and a great portion of the tracks a re very long and epic in length.
During the faster sections of the songs a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw black metal feeling and clean singing is also added into some parts of the songs and when acoustic guitars are utilized they bring elements of neo folk onto the recording and the tracks also bring in a great amount of diversity along with the heavier songs also bringing in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and as the album progresses the music starts adding in more avant garde influences and female vocals are also used briefly on the last track.
Mosaic plays a musical style that is mostly rooted in a more modern and atmospheric black metal style while the experimental, avant garde, ambient and neo folk elements gives the songs a lot more originality, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover nature, mysticism and occultism themes.
In my opinion Mosaic are a very great sounding experimental black metal band and if you are looking for something original and different, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Onset Of Wyntar" "White Gloom" and "Silver Nights". 8 out of 10.
