Krajiny Hmly Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the last album?

Namtar KH: Well, we had some „rest“ after completing the album and all the members worked on their other musical or non-musical projects. Since then we returned back to working on new material while also preparing for live gigs.

2.In December you had released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Namtar KH: I would say that musically „Cez ostrie skál“ (Across the edge of the rocks) continues where we left with its predecessor „Poza čierne hory“ (Behind the black mountains). It is built of similar elements but we believe it is stronger in all directions. Also, half of the songs were written by second guitarist, Felgor, so there is probably more variety than before.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Namtar KH: Many of the lyrics deal with the topic of personal and spiritual journeys and strife while some of the lyrics are also based on mythological stories and legends.

As for songwriting during the early material and especially on the debut album I had the tendency to add more riffs and more layers. With the full line-up we tend to write slightly more straightforward songs that we can play live as they are.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Krajiny Hmly'?

Namtar KH: Krajiny Hmly can be translated Lands of Mist. I had this idea some time before actually starting the band. With falling of the mist places become mystical and enlivened again, inhabited by the creations of our fantasy and distant memories. Few years ago I visited certain place in the mountains which was described as having almost 200 misty days so this can be seen as real place that fits the name.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Namtar KH: Cover was made by Svjatogor. It is based on the old photo of castle ruin and it fits nicely with overall mood and lyrics. It tells of arduous journey to the hidden and forgotten places.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Namtar KH: Last year we played more shows than in the past so our stage presence definitely improved and shows were more energetic and aggressive as proper metal shows should be. So probably some of the autumnal shows was our best.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for 2023?

Namtar KH: This year we will probably only play small number of shows due to current circumstances within band. So, there are no big touring plans. But we will definitely take some interesting offers if there are any.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and pagan metal?

Namtar KH: Well, I would not say there was any big reaction. As usually we mostly received feedback and support with the Central Europe (Slovakia, Czechia, Poland). The album definitely deserves more attention.

9.Over the years the band has also been a part of a couple of splits, can you tell us a little bit more about the bands or musical projects that you shared these recordings?

Namtar KH: Our debut material was split entitled “Keď padnú hmly” (When the Mists Fall) with ambient black metal Misty Forest. Album was organized by the label probably because both bands shared same lyrical themes and Mist in the name, heh.

Then there was this split or compilation Grave of Fire, Seal of Stars dedicated to the memory of our deceased singer, Wolkogniv. Several Slovak bands and Saltus from Poland took part in this one.

Finally our last split to the date was “Ešte jedle rastú” (Still the Fir Trees Grow…) with Sirin and Ruiny Vekov. There is a long-time friendship and collaboration with the members of these bands so that was also a base for the split while we also shared some themes like nature and patriotism.

10.Are any of the band members currently involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?

Namtar KH: Among others there are Nymord, Farost and Last Farewell to Mankind. Currently some of us are involved in creation of debut EP of band Zmij. All these mentioned are black metal bands.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Namtar KH: Only the time will tell. We will probably continue our musical journey trying to stay true to our roots while also searching for new inspiration and ideas.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

Namtar KH: I would say we all mostly listen to black metal but surely also some (old) heavy metal and some ritual and folk music.

13.How would you describe your views on paganism?

Namtar KH: I am personally long-time practitioner of Native Fate. I try to follow its ideals while it is also vital source of inspiration.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Namtar KH: Thank you!
