Sophist are a band from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada that has been featured before in this zine and plays a mixture of black metal and grindcore and this is a review of their album "Dissolution" which will be released in 2020 by Niflhel Records.
A very heavy and brutal sound starts off the album while the vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very distorted style and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and grindcore elements can also be heard.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the songs more of a raw feeling along with the vocals also adding in more of a deeper and angry approach on some of the later tracks and as the album progresses a small amount of synths are also added onto the recording and when guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very dark yet melodic style and one track also adds in a small amount of spoken word parts.
On this recording Sophist remains true to the mixture of black metal and grindcore that was established on their previous release. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover alchemy, occultism and nihilism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Sophist and if you are a fan of black metal and grindcore, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Solve Et Coagula" "Unholy Dissolver" "Prima Clavas" and "Crowning Achievement". 8 out of 10.
