United Kingdom's Revenant Marquis has returned with a new recording which continues the raw and lo-fi style of black metal from previous releases and this is a review of his album "Youth In Ribbons" which will be released in 2020 by Inferna Profundus Records.
Clean playing and drum beats start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of blast beats. Vocals are mostly depraved yet high pitched black metal screams along with the music capturing a very lo-fi atmosphere and the guitars are done in a very unconventional way.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very dark and melodic style while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of tremolo picking.
A small amount of dark sounding melodies can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing along with one track also introducing synths onto the recording which also gives the music more of a haunting atmosphere as well as some of the music also reminding me of some of the under produced black metal demos of the 90's. and as the album progresses a brief use of clean playing and whispered vocals can also be heard. The production sounds very dark, raw and lo-fi sounding while the lyrics cover vampirism, darkness and necromancy themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Revenant Marquis and if you are a fan of raw and lo-fi black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ephebiphobia" "Ysgol" "Taskermilward" and "Propagator Of An Unspeakable Ince". 8 out of 10.
