Asphodele are a band from France that plays a very melancholic form of post black metal and this is a review of their 2019 album "Jours Pales" which was released by Les Acteurs de L' Ombre Productions.
Tragic sounding piano's start off the album while all of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them. Some of the songs also bring clean female vocals onto the recording along with the solos and leads being done in a very melodic style and clean playing is also added into some parts of the music.
Spoken word parts can also be heard at times along with the faster sections of the music also bringing in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Angry yet depressive sounding black metal screams are also a very huge part of the recording.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the music also capturing a very melancholic atmosphere. One track also introduces classical guitars onto the recording and as the album progresses a brief use of clean male vocals and ambient style keyboards can be heard. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in French and cover dark and depressive themes.
In my opinion Asphodele are a very great sounding melancholic post black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "De breves etreintes nocturnes" "Nitide" and "Decembre". 8 out of 10.
